Its not a waste. You angle lumber up in the front and down in the rear. This keeps it from moving.

So I was slightly concerned if I did want to go to a tandem drive about my short 8' upper. Well here's a Chaparral with the same dimensions, just 22.5 rubber. Looks like it just clears to almost center of drives..
