Most people dont even get to the road test part when they fail. Know your pretrip and brake test like the back of your hand.
I tested with three other people, all three failed before even getting to move the truck.

Ya the first day ill admit i was horrible. I could shift up great, just fown shifting sucks. I had an old guy all he wanted to do was say u cant do this cant do that. Then he get in drivers seat an ssys look its just so easy. An im.like well ya you been doing it for 30 years. Next i was with a woman an she was awesome, she help gave me advice on saying out loud what gear i was in. Told even about seat postion. It was a HUGE difference between the 2 days. But still got sent home. But yes if still like to get my CDL.

I tried to self teach myself back before YouTube was around, the internet was there but I mostly read on how to double clutch. First shot I got I couldn’t get the truck into the next gear and was stuck in neutral. I had to pull to the side of the road and come to a complete stop and start all over again.....with the same cycle repeating itself for almost 5 miles where I pulled into a mom and pop truck stop.
This is where I met an old timer and I asked for help. I explained what I was doing and the very first thing he told me was thay once I got the truck rolling, never push the clutch in unless I planned on stopping. He walked me through watching the RPM’s and when to shift. Those two minutes were the only training I received. By no means was I an expert right away. It I could get from point A to point B.
Fast forward to today and I still can’t double clutch. I also don’t have a CDL for that reason as well....and I don’t need one but there are times I wish I had one to avoid being questioned.
Which leads me to my question....if it is OK to grind the gears while double clutching, then why is not ok to float the gears for the road test. I understand why they don’t want you coasting in nuetral but anytime you are grinding gears you are in nuetral, trying to grab a gear.
Why is there a difference here?Last edited: Aug 28, 2020

I’m sure they keep the double clutch thing around because it was put in the test book 75 years ago and nobody has bothered to change it. Look at how the wig wag is still in the book for the air brake test when the last truck to come from the factory with one was 1974!Last edited: Aug 28, 2020

Ok...so back to my question....why is there a difference in floating the gears smoothly and double clutching but grinding?
