Lately I have noticed a smell that seems to be coming from my rear ends. They dont seem to be leaking and it happens even when they are sitting for long periods of time. It seems to be coming and going from the breather tubes, any one know what it could be?

Just enough oil leaking from a wheel seal for you to smell it and not actually see oil. Get under the truck and look at each seal and you will probably one that is damp. Also check to be sure the vents are open.

Are you sure you didn't run something over? I ran over a dead skunk with my trailer earlier this summer, I swear my whole trailer reeked for 2 or 3 weeks. If I didn't know I'd hit that skunk I would have gone crazy trying to figure out where that smell was coming from.

To change my rotor on my Rollback I have to remove the hub and take out 10 bolts. Takes me about an hour; I tried several times
to re-use the seal, about $35.00. Twice it worked, 3rd time no go.
Now I just change it. Anyway, the time it leaked, ever so slightly,
It stunk so bad I couldn't believe it, hardly any showed, must have slung out and got burned away on the rotor. I ended up draining the rear and changing the oil, just because it had a horrible smell.
The new oil wasn't stinky like that at all, an oil smell - but not stink.

Short answer; find the leak, fix it, and change the oil.
Who knows how long that crap was in there?

This reply begs the question: how much oil (and type) does a differential require from empty?

My diff oil change was 28 quarts of 80/140 synthetic so about 3.5 gallons each for my dana 40-170’s which are 46k gear sets in 40k housings so they are pretty big.
