I knew someone at a prior job who was driving dump truck. He was partially retired and planned on not driving tractor trailer again.

The regs are clear, you test in a vehicle like the one you are testing for.

if you want to lift the automatic restriction (stupid to begin with), you have to test in a vehicle with a manual, class a with a trailer and air brakes. You can test in a straight truck with air brakes but then your license is supposed to be down graded to a b.

As for air brakes and not testing but keeping the removed restriction, if the state does an audit and sees that they can suspend the cdl, it has happened a number of times.

Many dump truck jobs require a class A. Sometimes it is due to insurance requirements but also due to the occasional need to pull an equipment trailer or a dump trailer.

As most one ton trucks with a gooseneck trailer require a class A also it is worth it to keep your class A.

Look for a local truck driving school that will let you pay by the hour or take their fast track/refresh course if you can. Typically they have 3rd party testers and so even if it is in another state you will be OK with not a lot of time required.
