I was conducting some comparisons between the W900 and W990. The W990 has some nice features and made be think twice about each one. The W990 does not have a couch. For me, that is a major drawback. My W900A has no leg room, the same as the W900L standard day cab. I much prefer the Aerocab with the couch. I am leading toward the W900B (short hood) aerocab (would save 11" worth of wheelbase and some weight). Maybe I am biased to them, because the W9's are what I have the most experience working on and driving.

There aren't any extreme aerodynamic mods that could not be had on the W900. In my opinion, they could have applied aerodynamic mods to the existing W900, making an optional W900 Aero model. Part of Kenworth's reasoning was to adopt the line to the new cabs and phasing out the huck bolted hand made cabs and sleeper among other things. It's understandable, as companies must strive to be competitive and save costs.

Jones performance makes a cowl hood. I've seen a photo of the W900L with the cowl hood and no air cleaners. It still looked sharp as ever. Kenworth could have created a new hood, deleted the air cleaners, made some side fairings for it and called it a day. It might have even bested the W990's slight increase in fuel economy.

What do you guy's and gals think? Would like to hear from someone who has both the W9 (B or L) and has also driven the W990. I can't comment on the 990 because I don't have any experience with it other than sitting in the nice cushy updated interior.

I think the new 990 is pretty sexy if dressed up properly:

I'm not sure what KW was thinking with the W990, to me it somehow lacks some type of identity. It almost looks like it was created by some truck shop out of the remnants of a wrecked T680, which is all it really is, a T680 with a big hood. I've sat in the 990 and I own and drive a W900L, other than the extra space between the seats on a 990 I really have no use for it and I'm a KW guy all the way. I don't see very many of them, I wonder if they're catching on. Now if I won some type of contest where the grand prize was a W990 I'd probably keep it, but I'm not running out to buy one on my own accord. 1980-kenworth-w900a-extended-hood-3406b-aerodyne162740842820-0.jpg 8be1d78050723064c995386ca6642e00.jpg img.jpg

The 990 might as well be a Freightliner or Westernstar as far as looks go. 900L without the big air cleaners are just ugly in my opinion, looks like a plucked chicken running around. 900Bs just look like they'd ride rough as a brick to me. I'd go with the W900L, in all their unaerodynamic beauty, but that's just me. I will say I've seen a few 990s that don't look too bad but they're no classic old school look.

I must be a weirdo. Not at all a fan of the 900L. Don't like the narrow grill. The only decent looking long hood was the 900A.

Nah, not a weirdo, it's just ones taste. I've never liked the headlights on Peterbilt's just coming off the grille the way they do on a few of their models and just look at how many people love Pete's out there, but to me that's the only thing I don't like about them. It all comes down to personal preference and needs.

You know the stacks aren't connected right? Just for show unless you connect them.

Only the driver's side is fake. Passenger side one is the real deal.
