As a company driver

If you are getting your CDL through a company then you will sign a contract, but other than that there is no "contract" that you will need to sign before hiring on with someone.

So I guess a little back ground and/or clarification is need to more accurately answer your question.

 

The only contract you might/should sign would be to pay back the company for training, if they trained you to get your CDL.

Your responsibilities are laid out in the drivers handbook, but they have no real responsibilities to you.
It is a game of luck.
If you are lucky you will get a driver manager that is on your side and be willing to work with, and for, you.

 

Contract? As a company driver? Contract?

Why start dragging lawyers into things to make it complicated?

If they start saying "contract", theres only one thing to do:

RUN, FORREST, RUN!!

 

Don't sign any contracts.

A company contract is only there to ensure a company gets what it wants while you get the short end of the stick.

 

Read everything before you sign anything. Contracts for a new driver with no experience is not a deal breaker in my humble opinion. BUT! All contracts are not created equal. Know what you are signing up for. Ask a lot of questions. Do your research. Yes, those contracts are there for the company and not you. I signed a contract with my first company because I thought the training I would receive was worth the risk. I read it. I fulfilled it. I have no regrets. Just keep in mind there are a LOT of predatory practices going on that target new drivers and the unaware. Same with the fleece purchase programs. Some are good but more are scams. JMHO YMMV

 

I've had dozens of "company" jobs, and don't recall any contract either, but that was years ago, and with the problems and liability of today, it wouldn't surprise me if contracts existed for company drivers.

 

Just a word of advice to the OP. Before signing away a year of indentured servitude I would check out some of the trade schools that offer driver training first. Some have fantastic job placement people. Most all states have grants and other forms of money available to help pay for it. Please, don't just go sign a contract until checking this out!
