I used to run 3 chip loads a day up to the paper mill, softwood & hardwood, both types were always overweight. One road in & out, scale boys would set up the portas right there and it was like shooting fish in a barrel. They'd weigh ya and tell you to make a copy of the ticket, and keep it in the truck as it was "good" for a month. That would never happen now.
Same thing with our hardwood lumber loads going to the furniture makers down south, they were always overweight too. Divisible load, of course, no permit, just run with it and dodge the scales. If I'd gotten caught, never did, but no doubt they woulda paid the fine, they always did, different times back then. I never felt right about it, what if I wrecked. Oh truck was found to weigh 92k, who's gonna swing, no thanks.
Bottom line, with the way things are now and I was in Johns shoes, I would keep running strictly legal. As an O/O, that's a choice each one has to make for himself, can't really say which ones right or wrong. With the way insurance companies look to crank up your rates for any rinky dink infraction, along with big brother FMCSA watching and tracking your every move, I think I'd try to keep it legal as best I could.
On a lighter note, @farmerjohn64 if you were up this way I'd tell ya to stay here and join the Q, catch up later gents, carry on... -

The other side of the coin, my scruples and morals sometimes aren't what they should be. I'm easy, but I'm not cheap... the right amount of money will usually talk me into about anything when it comes to trucks. I think that's a product of spending my career around guys like @jamespmack
