Also depends if you're a company driver and get paid a fuel bonus or not.
I guess it would be worth it too me if it was 90 degrees and I wanted to be cool all night. Don't think a lot of drivers are going to have a choice with the new no idling laws coming out.
I have an APU, don't have much of an issue, never used Idleaire, sorry can't help you. -
I like it but then I am an O/O and pay for my own fuel. When the cost of idling is $2.509 an hr plus wear and tear versus $1.89 an hr on idle air its kinda a no brainer.
On average idling burns a gallon of fuel an hr. -
If you're an owner/operator then you'd be better off spending the money on an APU in the long run.
If you're a company driver, then it's not worth it unless you get reimbursed for it. The average idle-aire night will cost you around $10-$15, while that fancy fuel bonus doesn't make up for that if you break it down to nightly gain.
I would say ask your company if they'll reimburse, if they will, then go for it. You get TV*, internet**, phone***, comfort, etc...
It's really a good concept with major failings in the cost department. Once all these states finally go no-idle a lot more companies will start paying for it, but even more will simply install APUs.
*Who has time for TV, after checking the e-mail and whatnot, you'll need to get sleep anyway.
**If it's internet that you're looking for, you can get off much cheaper by buying a cheapo laptop (not so cheap as to not have wieless networking) and paying the stupid fee fo siricomm, or some other wireless service like I did.
***Most of us have cell phones already. I think you get charged for long distance as well. -
idleaire crap thanks for wasting parking places
-
When I asked them why they only had one spot, they had this to say...
"We used to be in the rest areas, but we discovered the drivers liked to have things like showers and good food."
NO! REALLY?trucker43 Thanks this. -
I have also tried Dish network for the truck and once you get the hang of it setting it up all the darn time to watch a show or two...its gets old fast....but at least you don't have to worry about cbs cuttin on your favorite show. The only other thing to think about is if your allowed to have an inverter that is at least 500 which from experience our 450 wasn't quite doing the trick so we got a 750. inverter and that worked fine but he had to give it since the company didn't allow it.... back to square one.
bottom line....how much of your hard earned money do you want to spend for your down time? That is the question only you can answer.
Good luck

Luckily hubby drives for a company that will pay for idleaire and encourages drivers to use it, he too paid the 10.00 for the window shield and it is his to keep, loves the cool air in summer but complains that when its below 40 the heat is not that great, so in winter only uses it down south in warmer temps.
It can get pricey but I guess company figures drivers rest better (especially in summer) thus making them safer on the road?....I tend to see an improvement in his sleep while using idleaire so I guess they are right about that. -
There are so many inaccuracies in your numbers I'm not gonna bother to even begin pointing them out.
As for cool air....... I was in TX last summer. Outside temps were over 90 and no shade. I stayed comfortable in the truck all weekend.
