I’m a newbie driver, going to run for a small owner op. He has the mobile eld where you download the app on phone. But i want Something bigger i don’t want to use my phone. Please help me determine if to go with the Rand McNally device or Garmin? Or if you know of another device better to get?
I also have an iPad, can i just Download some trucker apps and use that instead? (Eld, trucker gps, scale, trucker parking & gas stations) or is iPad not precise?
please help point me in the right direction! TIA
Unsure which tablet device to get?

You can download Copilot for trucks
LaTrokera2020 and Chinatown Thank this. -
You can get just about anything for Ipad. Personally though, I switched from Ipad to a Samsung tablet. Just get any Android tablet and it will do more for you than a GPS specific one. Probably cheaper too.

I've recommended Co-Pilot for Trucks for years. It's still not bad for a paid app (I think it's still $149).
You can also download our very own HammerLane Truck GPS app. It's free. I still prefer the layout of Co-Pilot better, but it's mostly because that's what I've used.
All of the truckstop chains have apps that, if you connect it to your cell phone or wifi, will tell you locations, current fuel price, reserve parking, showers, etc
The CAT scale app is good for showing locations of the scales and you can pay for the scale ticket on the app instead of taking time to go inside the building.
Tailor-make your tablet to suit your needs. The stuff mentioned above is just the tip of the iceberg as it relates to the trucking industry.LaTrokera2020 Thanks this. -
Rand Mcnally seems to have nothing but trouble with every new device they put out. My company put Samsung tablet in every truck. We run everything on apps. We use Keeptruckin ELD and app. They give up Copilot live app I think it's $10 a month and it has live traffic update. It basically look 60 miles ahead for traffic. They pay for unlimited data on table also. So we can run the ELD data plus netflix and we can watch YouTube and stuff. Copilot truck GPS is a download maps. So once you have them you can go any place with internet but the live traffic info need internet data. Copilot truck navigation is not perfect actually the street address also seen to be off by 1/2 mile maybe. I always double check on Google Maps to look for driveway and building or truck entrance. None of the truck GPS are perfect. I liked Copilot display nagivgtion when driving. I believe you can try it and most of them for free.. if you can buy Copilot it was $149 now they might only have the $10 month subscription with live traffic.
If you got iPad I would go more that way then truck GPS stand alone setup. Garmin is or was the better truck GPS. I have not been keeping up with them. Some like Rand Mcnally but I I hear lot bad trouble with them year after year.LaTrokera2020 Thanks this. -
You need a holder for your Phone or tablet. The law say something like driver has to be able to see the ELD when driving. You can't set on floor or passenger seat. That's something to remember if run ELD on ipad android tablet. Here what my company setup is
The voice navigation on tablets is hard to hear. They gave us cheap tables small speaker. If you run a table I think automatic light sensor is a must. These cheap one don't have one. So at night you have dim the light so the screen is no to bright. Kinda sucks because almost every cell phone had automatic screen brightness. That screen shot of Copilot Truck GPS with live traffic update.Dieselboss and LaTrokera2020 Thank this. -
Apple Guy here... I use a stand alone RM for my GPS but everything else is on my iPhone/iPad. There’s a App out there for everything.
alds and LaTrokera2020 Thank this. -
Don't go for the cheap no name tablets, or subsided one like the Amazon Fire. Nothing wrong as tablets go, and I have a Fire. Just that no cell data and no GPS built in means it's useless for the vast majority of tasks you'd want.

Buy an iPad Pro 11 inch, 2018 or 2020 model with cellular, get a cheap data plan and it will do everything you need.
truckasaurus and MidWest_MacDaddy Thank this.
