Hey, y'all. I hope this is the right area to post. If not, I apologize greatly. I came across this site while looking for reviews on a couple of carriers.
So, here's the deal. My hubby is OTR again right now. We still have four kids at home -- one is off at college, thank goodness -- and although we've been married 21 years, I still really enjoy his company. I've been filling out applications left and right for him, and he's been offered a job from three companies.
The companies are Sysco, PTG, and Gurney Trucking. Sysco and Gurney have offered a local route, and PTG has offered dedicated, out 5 with a 34 reset. My husband has a background in management (with 10+ yrs driving) and eventually, wants to move out of the driver's seat and into a driver manager or up position. PTG is opening a new terminal in our area, and they have talked to him about his aspirations, telling him, "You will be a great fit as a driver and eventually, more as we get everything going."
We all know recruiters lie to get you in the door. Have any of y'll worked for any of the above companies, and if so, what was your experience with them as a driver? Or, if you haven't worked for them, have any of you heard anything good or bad about the companies?
My husband has asked my opinion, saying that it's "our" decision, but I feel like it's more his than ours. I want him to go where he will be happiest, even if it takes time from the family if it helps him further his desires. At the same time though, I don't want him going in blindly. I just want him to find his career "home".
Help me help my hubby make a good choice

Food service, biggest question is how old is he and what shape are his knees in.
I'd look at ltl outfits first of you want him home. Old dominion, etc.
Post your location.
@ChinatownRideandrepair, truckdriver31 and Cruella Thank this. -
back, knees had better be in good condition
if he wants to get into management, then he has to apply for that.
don't go on the premise that "someday" a job will move him up. all bosses/supervisors have their favorite arse kissing people they promote.
make the decision and apply for ONE or the other.Cruella, Rideandrepair, truckdriver31 and 1 other person Thank this. -
We're in the Vegas area, and I believe I did send out an app to Old Dominion yesterday or the day before, but I will have to look... they're all starting to get jumbled in my mind now.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -

I agree with everyone else, LTL is a safe bet. Good money and the potential to slide into management. FedEx Freight even has positions that are designed for experienced drivers to transition into leadership roles, such as Driver Development Instructor and Road Driver Advisor.
