Creeped me out at first, but at this point with nothing having happened in the last 150K miles since I started driving that truck, I suppose it's normal. -
Could be the DPF injector is bad. Sure is close to a meltdown .

First view in the mirrors the truck is throwing all kinds of black smoke. The exhaust is glowing all the way down and under the cab.

I've seen quite a few car catalytic converters do that, but never on a diesel truck.

I know this is just a light duty diesel pickup but the symptoms seem similar ...... No DEF system on this truck but it does have a DPF

The scary part is that he will just go across the scale with no problem but, the guy with one chicken light out will get pulled in for a level one inspection!
