Whats it like to deliver to residential areas? What's it called when a driver and a helper deliver to residential areas? is it ltl? Do you have to have doubles/triples, hazmat and tank? What companies in Florida do this? After this coronavirus is contained/goes away, I'm looking to get my cdl and deliver to houses/businesses, what's involved with getting a job like that?

It’s local P&D driver. You’ll need a class A or B depending on what kinda truck you’re planning to drive. Good luck to you

The newer developments usually aren’t too bad. The wires are underground, the streets are usually wider and everybody has a paved driveway.

The ones in the cities can be hard to get to, and the ones in the sticks are hit or miss. If they have a gravel driveway that’s a mile long and you can’t get into it because you’re in a tractor trailer, they’re SOL.

To go along with what @MACK E-6 said, in the LTL world you kind of have to use your better judgment. I’ve liftgated down china cabinets to old people and helped them set it inside their door. I’ve also delivered swing sets at the curb and told em “sign here, have fun”. There’s policies at most places to get the freight either to the first available spot out of the weather, or strictly curbside, depending on the company. Once you break protocol and tweak your back, however, that’s where the company leaves you hanging. Or helping that nice good lookin gal carry in her new entertainment center and you scuff her door, and she calls in and then the boss is asking you the next day “what the hell were you doing inside the house?!”. Ask me how I know.

I heard a story once about one of those same calls regarding “my diamond ring is now missing”.

I've returned to the terminal a few times with a shipment because it was unsafe to unload. Just hump that 750# safe off the trailer without a tailgate.

That sounds like the stories I heard about unloading 55 gallon drums of chemical on a stack of tires.

I had a home delivery last year where the woman answered wearing only a sweater. That’s it. Situations like that overshadow all the other bs

When I lived in Massachusetts, I have been known to unload a 55 gallon drum of paint on a snowbank. Of course I had him sign the paperwork first.
