Mr. Walker & I bought the 73 Cabover Kenworth in the spring of 1987. At that time all that was needed was a chauffeur license. My mentors like Daddy Ray ( RIP Sir ) could do magic tricks with a truck.... figure of speech.
I learnt a lot of things, including a way of life on the road from the outlaws of yesteryear, and I say that proudly!!! Any one that doesn’t like it can kiss my rosey red ###.
These men weren’t perfect, but most were good men, family men, men with family values.
Panty Snatcher as he was known on the CB was a little bit of an idiot, but a good guy... thought he was a lady’s man lol.
Tree Climber was a good ole boy.
Farm Boy was country as cornbread.
Mr. C was a cool dude for sure.... we had 13 speeds castrated to 9’s he always carried a 13 spd knob hidden away lol...
Underdog was a goody 2 shoe, didn’t care much for him.
Silver Fox was about 5’-5” and thought he was 8’ lol..... great guy! Seen him put a car in the median just as we were approaching Fancy Gap north bound.
Brian.... lord he needed a bath lol!! Caught Brian napping out on 73 between Portsmouth (104) and route 32 in Ohio. 1969 Cabover shaker of pops is what he was driving... I pulled over and knocked on his door, hot summer day and his windows were down, but he never answered. But I heard him snoring. Got the Manila rope out of my truck, tied one end to the grab handle on the passenger side, came around the front and tied the other end to the grab handle on the drivers side. Then left lol.... yes we did those things.
Red Bird retired not being able the straighten his fingers, they were bent in the shape of his steering wheel on his B model Mack. RIP Sir.
Pop.... Pop gave me my start in trucking. The truck we bought was leased to Pop ( Machinery Hauling ) so I kept the lease.
Many of the men close to retirement age when CDL came out, left trucking all together. Many didn’t have good writing skills, many left WW2 as a young man with bad memories, and simply wanted to outrun them. Daddy Ray told me one time... not sure I can take that test, I can’t read that well Jim. Many felt intimidated so they quit trucking. I know these things because I set and ate with these men, I followed these men down the highway, these men sculpted a greenhorn into who I am today.
I remember the big selling quote for the CDL license...... To keep the best of the best on our highways!
Didn’t work out like that.....
No one knows everything, but everyone can be helpful sometime.....
Y’all stay safe out there.dwells40, PoleCrusher, cke and 17 others Thank this. -
The TV show really only took the main characters and their personalities from the books. Some of the episodes look to have drawn inspiration from the book plots but its not a shot-for-shot retelling of the book series.
The books do make the occaissional reference to events in the previous books. However, so far there doesn't seem to be a plot that links the books together. Each one is a seperate crime or case that needs to be solved.
The characters in the book seem to have more depth. You hear all the little thoughts in Walt's head, learn his vulnerabilities and such. Vic's character was definitely toned down for TV. She's quite the wild one in the books. Very sassy.PoleCrusher, cke, Brettj3876 and 8 others Thank this. -
