I have authority and IRP to run Interstate, but due to C19 the Texas Comptroller is dragging their feet in issuing IFTA account (almost a month since I filed and I haven't heard from them. I called them, they have my application; was told they are behind by 5-6 weeks). I have been moving freight just in Texas but would like to haul elsewhere. Buying Fuel Tax Permits in each state would be pricey. Wondering if I should just do it anyways, since I'm keeping track of mileage and fuel purchases with my ELD, and not worry about Fuel Tax Permits.

    Any suggestions?

Their department isn't closed. I'd drive to them. Mine is in cali. They told me 2-3 weeks before covid. So I just drove there and walked out with my stickers

I filed in WY and had my IFTA paid the next day, are you required to file in TX? might be easier to file in another state, but if all else fails ring their phone off the hook and get their attention, they will push you through if you get on their radar.

the problem will be if you are inspected, it is very likely they will want to see your IFTA license - especially since you do not have IFTA stickers on display on your truck. Better off to buy the permits and not get dinged or worse at an inspection, especially since it appears that you are a new authority and will show inspect on the system.

I tend towards rule following, so your risk tolerance may be higher than mine...

    Hello!
I'm in TX too trying to get my interstate authority.
If you don't mind, what forms did you have to file for an IFTA account?
Are there two fuel tax forms for TX? One for TX and one for Interstate?

    Thanks!

The State Comptroller here in Texas is requiring all IFTA applications be done online or via snail mail due to C19.

I have Texas IRP, so I file IFTA application in same state. I have called twice already. They are working remotely and the process is moving very slow.

I've been driving OTR since before IFTA started, and since then I've never been asked by a DOT inspector for IFTA license. Now that could be because I've always had stickers on the truck. But there could always be a first time. Buying Fuel Tax Trip Permits would get expensive. And because, like you, I lean towards following the rules, the risk reward may not be worth it.
