There are some R/V manufacturers in the northwestern part of the country. Insurance a cost of business something only controlled by time in operation. Truck and trailer cost can be controlled. Hauling opportunities very on your location. Continue to research spring will be a better time to start a new startup IMO. There is a wealth of information on this website. Also a number of guys starting out, while reading you may notice they change directions on their thinking as they get into business. Every story is different as each start in different part of the country.

@KKonthemove I just went through all of this myself in the last month. There is a lot to discuss and share. You are in a good location in my opinion, I am in Phoenix and see decent loads between St. George and Vegas daily. Feel free to PM me for my number and I'm happy to answer any questions you have.

Like I said, I just started, so I may not know everything but I can tell you about my experiences and why I've done what I've done, and what I'd do differently, if anything..

I passed a guy hauling 4 vehicles today. I think my first move will be getting a CDL. While doing that I’ll work on getting a license and the appropriate tags for the truck.

the fact is because of the way my retirement is structured, I’m limited to how much I can make so by making my wife the owner, I may take a low salary and use most ( if any:)) profits towards our equipment.

I read in one thread that a guy has an insurance broker that ups the amount based on the load, if he is hauling something expensive. I’m going to have to look at that more closely. If insurance is that expensive then I will be forced to work or make a certain amount each month. I still have to put a pencil to all the costs when I get em figured out.

I appreciate the offer, I will be in touch. I have been getting some interesting viewpoints from some of the people I’ve been talking to at truck stops:)

I have been looking at some boards. I can see how they work but I’m not sure if I’m looking a live runs or a demo. I also called one broker however the lady that answered seemed to be in training herself. Lol. I’m still trying to get a handle on this as well as learning how to determine how much to charge/accept.

Google RV Transport .. In and around Goshen Indiana there are numerous companies that you'll be able to contact that do only that. The drawback is that all loads with exception to a few originate in Indiana, it isn't a job that offers many if any return freight . So you can expect pay going and not coming. But many do not have forced dispatch si one can work as much or as little as they want. Your wife could as well be a team driver or a companion should she have the time and inclination to help tow the line as your boss.. or Owner of the Truck. So yes there is plenty of freight but it's one way on most cases..

    Thanks Kearyoke,

I am learning about all kinds of different considerations I did not know about. Lol , I was once insulted when I was a younger man when a man told me “ you don’t know what you don’t know”. Well it is certainly true with this hot shot business.

I’m over 1,500 miles from that part of the country so I’m not sure how that would pencil out but I am certainly going to look into that option. There are several RV dealerships within an hour and a half from my house and I plan on talking to a few of those business.
I appreciate all the feedback. It is really opening my eyes to all the regulations you all have to deal with.

Since 99.9% of RV transport is one way trip, drive to Indiana (or any other drop lot) bobtail and pull the RV back to a dealer close to your house. Or run 2 or 3 of them with the last one close to home.

If you didn't want to buy a truck they also have Drive Away division where you drive motor homes delivering them to dealers while pulling your own car on a dolly (or flat tow if capable) for your return trip.

Well folks, I thought it would be cool to give an update:) I’m the original poster but lost my info and created a new account. I got rid of that email program also.

well it sure as hell wasn’t easy but the absolute worst part was dealing with the DMV in my state while making truck, trailer, and insurance payments.
However I am now operating under my own authority and after loosing a couple load opportunities to miscommunication, I am running my first load next Tuesday! I know I have lots to learn like this ELD contraption but PC is my friend. I’m retired and won’t be running that hard because of my hotshot sleeping accommodations in a pickup but I’m excited ( like a kid) to get this show on the road. I’m sure after my first night in the truck that excitement will quickly get a reality check but for now it’s fun.
Started trying to make some deals with brokers on partial opportunities today. Couple actually were willing to change dates and kick in a little more money but one was shot down because they needed docking trailer for a forklift. I even explained I have a hydraulic dove tail that could easily have lifted the 8000 lbs but the shipper shot our idea down. But I learned some brokers will try and make things happen if you sell them on an idea and let them know what you are trying to put together.
    wish me luck guys:)

Strategic Transport LLC is Open for Business. Wow it has been a while since your first post. Continue to meet different brokers and try to find some direct freight coming out of you area. Wishing you luck on your adventure.
