    Sometimes to extend the strap length or tie down area not strap friendly.

    Oh, well what we’re picking up is metal and if you use straps you have to use edge protectors, so I’m guessing the second reason

    The chain can be a shorty(snap chain) and extend a strap for say 3 feet. Never touches the load. See what he does that's how you learn the tricks of the trade. Or ask him.
