Is it possible to run 16:1 pistons in a bxs and not retune the ecm?
Will it run? Will the ivas cause issues?
I may have a little time between a rebuild and being able to tune my ecm or convert to a 6nz and was hoping to run the lower compression for until i can get tuned?
16:1 pistons in a stock bxs

Yes, it's absolutely fine. 10r7172 is the Cat part number for the 16:1 industrial packs, your real gain is going to come after you convert it to a 6nz 70 pin ECM setup, keep the twins and do away with the precooler and IVA's

That's my plan in the end but unfortunately its going to need to be rebuilt sooner than I was ready to do everything.
Getting coolant on top the pistons from either a head gasker, cracked head or dropped liner.
Someone had said if I did 16:1 pistons without tuning it that it wouldn't work. So wanted to get other opinions -
I just installed 16:1 pistons in one and it was really underpowered on the low after installing the 16:1 packs. Installed a modified 625 fill with the vva's off and prcooler off and it smartened it right up...only makes 45psi of boost now but it pulls wicked good. Their are some good bxs deletes on ebay for $150 but if you have access to s 70 pin computer id put a 550 brakesaver filq in it or a 7cz 600/2020 tq file. Leave the twins. It will be a monster.

Yea I figured it would be somewhat underpowered with just the pistons and no tune, then again its derated now because of a bad iva harness plug. Thinking that may have something to do with the head gasket issue.
Will likely swap a 6nz ecm in it but just not in the cards right now. -
Just looking into this forum as I’m looking to do the same thing in the same situation as was not looking to do an inframe as soon as I am but I have a friend who can flash my bxs ECM to the 6nz program for me now do I need any different wiring as I know the 6nz has a different harness does any of that matter or will the ECM ignore the Iva pins as if they didn’t exist and I could just leave the ivas under the valve covers. Also thank you for the part numbers

I wouldn't do it if you've got the higher compression pistons. The IVAs help limit the cylinder pressures.

i think that u have to do some moving pins to make the 6nz ecm work on Bxs
lester Thanks this. -
Ok thank you guys I’ll have to do some looking into the pin outs of both to prepare and yes I will be changing to 16:1 as I inframe it this week I’ll post more of what I run into with the pin locations!

Got mine back Friday. Did 16:1 ipd kit. New head, spacer plate and bottom turbo.
Haven't got it tuned but it runs great as is.
Will get tuning done some time in the future but it runs fine with stock tuning and 16:1 pistonsblack_dog106 and lester Thank this.
