3406e fuel problem

    put a guage on ,will not hold pressure, i guess ill start with filters and pressure relief valve. where is the check valve? is it built into the housing where the relief valve is or at the end of the hose going into it.

    With an E model the valve can be located in two different places depending on the engine serial number. If it's a 1LW than the fuel filter base on the drivers side of the engine. It screws in from the bottom with a 1" wrench.

    If it's an earlier engine than there is a fuel block with steel lines and hoses running into them just below and to the rear of the air compressor. Again a 1" wrench will remove it and it's located in the bottom of the block

    Just an update... guess im gonna have to take it to Cat. thanks for all the feedback. ive replaced all fuel lines from primary filter forward, replaced check valve, changed 2nd filter and hand primed system, can still get it running with shot of ether and seems to run down the road ok. system holds pressure when shut off at about 50lb or so. also had batteries load tested and were ok. must be something electrical just has me scratching my head. one thing that doesnt seem right is when i open bleed screw and hand prime it the fuel has no air bubble at all but when pressure builds in the system i get a vibrating sound inthe fuel block and air bubbles come out. anyone have any ideas before i run it to Cat.

    maybe your fuel transfer pump is sucking air?

    they are relatively cheap and easy to replace. I know sometimes they can suck air without leaking so you could try that.

    I replaced pump 9 mo. ago like to think thats not it. took truck to Cat dealer, hopefully they can figure it out and leave me with enough $$ to eat tonight.

    Had the same problem, replaced transfer pump, haven't had a problem losing prime since, but i think the only problem was the spring inside the pump that prevents fuel from bleeding back, and old pump was only about year old. Mayb a little late but hope this helps.

    Mine was hard to start if it sat for awhile. Was injector oring bleeding off fuel. Mechanic said Cats are bad about orings going bad. Hope this helps

    Had same problem with two injector o-rings leaking so bad, after i replaced them it starts fine and milage improved somewhere between .5 -.75 mpg.
