Do you log a road test during orientation?

How you're "classified" is irrelevant. If you're operating a commercial vehicle, you are required to comply with Hours of Service regulations. DOT could care less if you're an employee, an independent contractor, the dispatcher's daughter's boyfriend or a guy off the street when they write you a ticket.

When we road test personnel, they do not run a log book and neither do we. I can run all I want as a local driver running a tractor trailer and never run a log book unless I fall outside the exceptions for a 100 air mile driver.
As a local driver and road test evaluator, you and the person being evaluated can operate under 49 CFR 395.1 (e)(1)

However the soon to be driver must account for all hours worked for the previous 7/14 (Canada) days, thus we make them log it on line 4.
Could you see a driver sitting in class 8 hours then completing class and boom he/she is dispatched because he/she didn't have to log it, meaning they would be awake 22 hrs with no rest, legally. Not going to happening.

Logging line 4 is sufficient though, logging line 3 shouldn't hurt you either way.
