"Work From Anywhere" Jobs

I briefly worked at a United Van Lines agent and a couple employees confirmed for me what AsianMai claimed on his YouTube channel: that to drive for a van line, you're not required to actually live within a morning drive time of the agent.

One of the employees I talked to wasn't even an o/o himself, he was just a company driver. He told me he lived in Knoxville TN while working for an agent in Greensboro NC.

I've been a furniture mover for four years and I'm prepared to take the van line route if necessary, but I'm also interested in other trucking jobs.

Are there many other types of trucking companies that offer this sort of opportunity? I ask because I plan to relocate within a year to a pretty remote area, and decent-paying local jobs are slim pickings there.

The only difficulty I could foresee with other OTR jobs is trying to get my foot in the door without prior CDL driving experience (I currently drive box trucks).

Is that still possible, or am I more likely to make it sticking to the moving biz?

My understanding of the CDL process at a van line is something like:

-Take tests online (already practicing these)
-Go to DMV for permit test
-Learn/practice in truck lent by van line agent
-Take skills test in that same truck

So I'd have to be in the area for all that stuff, which I could do for a time. Is it pretty much the same process elsewhere?

In either case, how long should I expect that process to take, from company laborer to OTR driver?

 

No CDL yet. Willing to get endorsements later if needed. I will most likely be in NC.

 

My current work schedule as a mover is very erratic, no predictable time when I'm off work day to day. So I've pretty much ruled out cdl school as an option.

I think my best bet is to get hired and do on the job training from there. Some van line agents offer this, do other companies as well? Ashley etc?
