CDL itself is a federal program administered by the states so federally you don't need one unless your state has decided to exceed the federal requirements.

Based on all the bashed trees on the road past my cabin to the camping spot at the lake, state efforts to regulate huge and RV's N stuff might not be a bad idea....

 

If it’s just for personal use just put the words Not For Hire on it and I think you should be fine. People use them for their personal business all the time. It’s when you are running for hire that most of the headache starts.

That being said, I would call the DOT and just ask them. That’s the safest way.

No, it doesn’t. There are literally MILLIONS of commercial trucks that are “not for hire”. You think the DOT never inspects a UPS or Coca-Cola truck?

 

Ha i disagree with the bolded text. Me and a buddy have conversations about doing what youre trying to do all the time for some rides we might spot out there in the world and on the internet if we like them enough. A quarter jokingly, 3 quarters dead serious. I support this
