I'm looking at 2 LTL's to start out with and both use double 28' trailers for their Line Haul positions. They both have training programs for drivers with low experience (me) but wanted to hear advice/experiences from those that have experience with before I start.

Well, for starters, don't try backing them until you've got a bit of experience.

They are going to wiggle. Just go with it, drive normally. Before you pull in anywhere, make sure you can drive through. You're not backing out.

Make sure the heaviest trailer is your lead. I made it a habit of always connecting my safety chains at convertor first.
I had steady run, tandem wagons, beer lead, meat rear., 137K every night. I liked pulling them.

How much differently do they track in a turn vs a 48' or 53' which I have some experience with?

Ive never pulled double 28s... But I have pulled 42 with a 36 pup, and a 48 with a 36 pup... Neither of the really tracked much more than a 53 with the tandems all the way to the rear... Maybe like 3 or 4 feet more inside tracking on a 90 degree turn

They turn shorter than long singles, and as @azheavyduty said they wiggle.

One time I will tell you to watch the mirror less. If you focus on a empty pup bouncing around and try to counter act it. You will wind up in a ditch.

As @'88K100 mentioned. Heavy in the front.

If your stuck in a situation and have to back up, without experience. You can chain lead to pup, or dolly to lead. Its slow and labor intensive. But can save your rear.

I was in the mountains when I looked in the mirror. I saw one go this way and the other go that way. I decided to look in the mirror a whole lot less pulling doubles!

I still remember towing my first set of doubles, then a set of triples behind a wrecker. Seeing a empty pup jump and sway scarred the heck out of me.

Don't! I remember, my O/O job, they wanted us to pull doubles out of the rail. I got my endorsement, but told them I'd never do it, and to this day, I never pulled more than one trailer at a time. One was enough.

MACK E-6 and Speed_Drums Thank this.
