I have a 1989 Pete 379 with 18 speed rto. I just had a problem, the splitter is in overdrive and the truck wont go back into direct, it won't move unless in overdrive, I've never had any problems till now, any suggestions?

    I have a problem with my 13 speed (RTLO18913A).
When I'm in 5H and preselect L to go into 6L, occasionally instead of releasing it so I can pull the handle into 6, it shifts back into 5L as soon as I move my leg of the pedal. Of course it makes a big bang every time that happens.

The whole transmission was rebuilt 2 months ago mostly because of this problem but the shop that did it doesn't know what could be the problem. I have replaced slave valve and it's still happening.

Does anyone have an idea what could it be???

Bulldog power, I just know figured out your transmission problem hoping you get this if you haven’t figured it out as yet not sure how long ago you posted your problem...so as I said before I have the same issue as you do almost to a T....I too just put in a remodeled 13sp transmission and had the same problem....so here’s the thing if your park and you flip the black switch up and down you should hear the switching sound in the transmission it should be the same with the red switch..by flipping it back and forth you should hear that flickering in the transmission if you don’t then that’s the problem and it should mean the air lines are connected incorrectly from either the gear stick or the transmission...if those are connected correctly then the only other problem is the transmission it self....hope I help somebody because my mechanic made me felt I was crazy

RTO or RTLO? Bulldog power isn't on here anymore.

If it's a RTO go re read swanns post on how they shift he explains it pretty good. We run an old school 13 double over. You don't pre select em like the new ones

Sorry I just now seen how long ago bulldog posted his issue June 2013....anyways I tried both ways ...I pre selected that didn’t work and I tried shifting in neutral and same result...shifting from a 5OD to a 6 direct is not going in... I have to skip & go to 6OD....same thing when going from 6OD to 7 direct and so on and so on....plus when I’m down shifting then the problem go in reverse I can get from direct to OD....so up shifting no OD to direct and down shifting no direct to OD...my mechanic who sold me the transmission is saying it’s not going from 5OD to 6 direct because I change my rears from a 390 to a 355 so the transmission is turning to fast for 6 direct so I should go to 6OD...and that it’s normal...if I want 6 direct go to 6OD then immediately switch to 6 direct....which makes no sense to me because if I caught the 6OD why would I need to go back to 6 direct when 6OD works perfect as if 6D was never need at all ...I’m stumped guys

Simple question. What model transmission. Is it a RTO or RTLO ??

Your mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about. Your rear gears has absolutely no effect on how the trans shifts.

Only road speed and engine speed.

Omg...thank you...I thought I was losing my mind...he still insists nothing is wrong that’s the way it’s supposed to work..I’m going to repair the synchronizer on my super 10 and replace it...I’m done debating this issue with him..for every point I raise he has a rebuttal that I’ve never heard of...

I’m not sure if it’s a RTL or RTLO...but I tried your shifting advice and nothing work....double clutch and selecting the gear in neutral position...nothing works...switching from overdrive to direct don’t work and gearing down switching from direct to overdrive don’t work...surprisingly they do seem to work when the gear stick is in position but it’s when I’m changing gear stick position I can’t flip the red switch (direct / overdrive) it won’t work....so something changes or need to change in the transmission when I flip the direct / overdrive and the gear stick goes into neutral position..i...so I can leave in overdrive until the last position then flip to overdrive or I can go overdrive and keep it that way until iOS get to the last gear...

Your doing it all wrong if you have a RTO.

I'm thinking you do because if it was a RTLO you wouldn't have any issue because they shift so dam easy.

If it is a RTO then yes it makes sence.

You can't preselect those. Nor can you split the red button in neutral during a compound shift. You need to compleat your full shift THEN split it if need be.

Its just how they work. No way around it .
But I guess if your putting a 10 speed back in then it doesn't matter. Lol

So basically you’re say I have to catch the overdrive first then flip the switch back for the direct as they call it....now I’ve done that too but here’s the thing...when I shift the overdrive it actually feels like that’s the actual next gear I should be going into....so when I flip the red button back I’m getting this high compression asking to go back to overdrive immediately...and it’s the same as I move up then as I said down shifting is similar except it’s the overdrive that won’t go in unless I go direct first then overdrive by then I have to switch to overdrive in order not to stall....
