Hello everyone,
I am currently 20 from New York, planing on getting my CDL permit. My original plan was to wait until March when I turn 21 and apply with a company, planning on prime. I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions on what I should do to get my foot in the door in the meantime. I currently don’t work anywhere in the industry. Should I get my CDL permit ASAP, or wait until I’m 21? Do any companies work with people under 21?
What Should I Do?

Chinatown Thanks this. -
I highly recommend steering clear of any company that requires signing a contract for training. The company you mentioned engages in this shady practice.
A truck school training contract bonds you to them until they get what they want from you.
Research, research, research. Ask questions. Read what information is available on this forum. It'll only help you make a better and more informed decision.

I did the same as @flybynight12 did. Go to a private cdl school now & get your class A with endorsements. You can be in somebody’s truck on your Birthday, i was.
Don’t wait and go thru a company’s cdl mill. You won’t learn as much or be nearly as prepared. Take your time and find a quality school to go to. It will benefit you in the long run, plus you won’t have to sign any contracts with your perspective employer.AModelCat, flybynight12 and Chinatown Thank this. -
I agree with the others that posted, get your cdl now and hit the road at 21 yrs. old.
Where are you in New York?
Some companies hire 20 yrs. old cdl drivers to run within the state.
There's also non-cdl truck driving jobs, which will hire you with or without a cdl. Maybe do that after you get your cdl, then switch to a cdl truck after you're 21 yrs. old.

Non-cdl truck drivers can run 48 states.Last edited: Oct 20, 2020

A lot of yard dog positions don't require CDL . That's a lot of backing practice.
