Main difference was gear train. Pickups had geartrains at the front. 5500 had less output, expected higher duty cycle.. Anything else it was at the back of the block. Main issue is duty cycle. Most people I know with diesel pickups that work them have no issues. Those who use it as a grocery getter do.
A freind has a dodge 5500 service truck. Tons of idle time and slow speed putting around. He has to remove the entire intake system and egr cooler once a year. Totally coked up, engine breathes thru a hole size of a walnut.

If I were to go independent I would seriously consider going with the gas engine vs diesel in a cab and chassis. Diesels just have too much crap on them and they're so dealer dependent for repairs.

Last 2 buses we have bought have been gas. Tired of the diesels. We have a 2017 with a cummins. Cummins spends 3-4k every winter under warranty. Next aug warranty is over, that will be permanently fixed. (Not illegal in alberta)
The 8.8L big block you get in an international bus is sweet. Low rpm, redline is 2500rpm. 565ft/lbs torque at 1400 rpm.
The 2020 we just bought they changed the axle ratio and gave us the 6th gear in the allison. 6.17 axle ratio, will dam near squawk the tires, 11r22.5s. Lol
The driver is averaging 0.5mpg less then the diesel DT466 she had before. Winning.

Ups has been buying some Gas package cars with GM v8 for some years now. If that tells you anything.

15 years ago when the 444E was big in the package cars, they were phazing out 300 straight 6 fords and 292 Chevys. Sometime around 2010 I towed one still with the 292 in it. Just don't remember the exact year.

The good days of diesel pickups are long gone!

So at the expense of sounding like a complete dumb dumb, Im trying to trace an air leak in my truck before I take it to our shop mechanic next week (part of agreement when I bought it) because I dont trust him at all to fix the actual problem. The only place I can find any form of leak is at the air dryer. The valve on the bottom leaks air audibly from 120psi to 100psi in less than a minute (with the truck off), then stops. Pressure continues to drop slowly until it hits zero within a few hours.

Anyway, am I reading the pressure guage needles wrong? Its a dual guage, white needle is primary and orange needle is secondary correct?
