I grew up around trucks and got away from it as a young adult. In my 50's now and am tired of answering to someone else. I have some money; enough to buy a used truck/trailer, start up and carry me for a couple of months. I don't want to work a bunch. Out and back stuff and I don't have to make a mint full of money. My question is ..... Should I look at my own authority or try to lease onto a "no forced" O/O company with no recent verifiable experience. I plan on taking a 2 week refresher course at my local college just to re-orient me to laws/regulations and I have maintained my CDL for over 30 years while not driving a truck. Saving my money might be good advice but it'll only last me a year or 2. Working for someone else makes me answer to them and when they want me to work so that's out. OK BLAST AWAY!

Where ya located? By out and back do you mean 200-250 miles and come back? We're strictly local like that. If you're planning to run like that you have to be in a good lane to start with and if the rate ain't good enough to come back empty you'll have to make sure you have something coming back.650cat425 Thanks this.

If that's what you plan on doing you really can't take less than 4.00 mile to run it right. And anything ya get coming back is just icing on top. Can't pull sub par rates and expect to make it

Right on 70 halfway between Indy and St Louis. Pretty close to Effingham. I am talking 500-600 miles out then back. Most weeks home 1-2 nights during week and most weekends. No kids at home and just monthly bills.

The truck & the trailer are the easy part. The insurance is going to be the bite. You want to make a few calls to the insurance companies to get those quotes. You basically are a new driver with no experience. It is going to be a climb. I would take it slow. I don't believe you would be able to lease onto a company because you have no current experience. I believe you're going to have to drive for a company to get some current experience. All the best to you with your journey

Thanks.... I have talked to a couple of insurance guys informally. They all are saying 20k ish first year with a discount for paid up front. My driving record is perfect and no DUI's etc... Will brokers look at experience and history? I realize any route I go I will be shorted on money for the first year and I have factored that into my start up costs. I know it is a 100k gamble I am facing so I want to make sure I give my due diligence to it before a decision is made.650cat425 Thanks this.

I think what your doing is great! I hope it works out, and I think its possible. I've been researching this a lot lately. What Ive found is you will need to do it with your own authority like stated already.... finding someone to lease on to will be almost impossible in your situation. Your insurance quote looks about right, it's painful but workable. From what I can find most brokers don't care about how old the authority is, they just want the loads covered. Some people can run off of several load boards and maintain flexibility in their work schedule without dealing with contract obligations.
Try to study the freight in your area... what it pays to go where and then how to get back without loosing revenue. -
I have been doing test dispatching for several weeks. Just using Landstar open board. I can't speak of revenue but I can definitely do out/back runs running 1500~ miles a week. Based on everything I have read/watched on YouTube and checked I am not going to make a fortune but I can pay the bills and have decent cigarette and beer money. Plus park the truck for 3 weeks when my wife wants to go on a cruise. This is just one more check in my due diligence. Thanks for your input!Speed_Drums and 650cat425 Thank this.
