I was looking to get back into trucking and did a DOT exam on my dime to see if I could qualify. The blood pressure was right on the cusp at 140/90 (I was really nervous) on medication. I got a 1 year certification and started applying. I got a job offer from XPO and they sent me to same spot I went to get drug test and certification. They only drug test me then so I assumed they used my recent results (within 2 weeks). The HR rep from XPO said that although it is the same facility they can not accept the facility's earlier results because they were done before I got hired (2 weeks). They want me to go back there but reading on the FMCSA website that after an initial result of 140/90 the next certification will have to be lower or I will get a 3 month certification. Should I chance it or move on applying to other companies that will accept my recent 1 year certification. This is my first job offer do others require you to get DOT medical even if you are already valid?

Shop around for a company that will accept your current physical.

It would be better if you could jist get it down a little. Better for your job and ultimately your health.

But as Chinatlwn said you could always look for a different company.

I get nervous with blood pressure tests as well. My numbers go from high normal, to about where you're at. White coat syndrome.

As was mentioned above, breathing control does help.

Beet juice also works to lower BP. It does it by producing Nitric Oxide which relaxes blood vessels. This is the single best method of lowering pressure quickly that I found. It has a similar affect as some BP meds.

Another thing, is make sure the person taking your BP is doing it correctly. Most don't. It's important that your arm is at heart level, as the correct way to test. Not below that level as many places are setup. It makes a difference.

Also insist that you can sit for a few minutes before they test. Don't just walk in, sit down, and go. You're not ready. And again, the correct way to test is after a few minutes rest.

    Good luck.

Go to an urgent care clinic and get a script for some blood pressure meds to get you through this. Then when you can see your doc and get your B/P under control.

140/90 should not be medicated. At that level, the meds present more risk than the small amount of benefit. Lifestyle and diet can easily lower that as it is only borderline.

The shame of this is that OD was on standby but I chose XPO for their personalized training. A few days after I thought I passed the XPO physical OD called and said they couldn't hold my spot any longer. I'm not sure if they take DOT or not I will call the manager tomorrow and see if the Dec slot is still available for training. Their training I will be in class with people with no CDL. XPO I would have a personal trainer to take me from where I am at now. XPO says they need the DOT by tomorrow so I am on the fence. The occupational health center is open 24 hours so I still have time.

I have been trying. I get anxiety as soon as the cuff starts compressing in the doctor's office. I have been trying to relax, slow my breathing (thanks for the link), and eating bananas and I am going to get some beet juice which people and studies say lower it. I'm trying...

Tough spot to be in. Hope 'white coat syndrome' doesn't make it worse.
