Driving an old sterling with a c15 cat and an 18 speed, in 6th, 7th, and 8th gear when im in overdrive and i have my foot off the pedal and slowing down to downshift, as soon as i preselect down to direct drive the transmission automatically slips into neutral and starts grinding. It doesn't do it with any of the other gears. When im in 6th, 7th, and 8th i have to pop the stick in and out each shift. Has this happened to anyone before?

You are not supposed to pre select splits, only then range selector, you split when you are shifting

If you're moving the splitter right before you let off the gas then that is preselecting

Sounds like its coming out of gear like normal, just not catching the other gear to complete the split. What's the air pressure to the splitter cylinder? Low air pressure will make it lazy. If the exhaust port is plugged it'll be lazy too.

stuckinthemud and cjb logistics Thank this.

Got full air pressure, i think the splitter valve might be going out, but also i think the synchro gears for the splitter might have rounded teeth that could be causing it

Reservoir pressure means absolutely zip all when it comes to the transmission. Its regulated down to something like 65ish PSI. Only way you'd know if it was good would be if you hooked a test gauge on it.

Try downshifting in the same manner you upshift. Gas pedal up and down.
