A person needs a certain amount of protein (4 calories per gram), and a certain amount of fat (9 calories per gram) to stay healthy. So once you've eaten your needed protein and fat, you can gain or lose with carbs. You can be plenty healthy with no carbs at all. So the best way to lose weight and stay healthy is to regulate the amount of carbs you intake to stay at a caloric deficit. And in the end, it's that simple. You eat less calories than you burn, and you lose weight. You eat more calories than you burn, and you gain weight.
For long burn, I simply eat more often. My wife makes jerky for me, and when I get hungry, I nibble on a piece.LameMule Thanks this. -

Looking strong there. I never could make much progress on my legs, and I did ATG squats three days a week.

Won bodybuilding shows and powerlifting competitions. Quit competing a long time ago but I'm still at it at 60.. -
