Oregon became the first state to decriminalize hard drugs like heroin, cocaine and meth in a 59-41% vote as of early Wednesday morning, according to the Associated Press

The "Drug Addiction Treatment and Recovery Act" will transition Oregon's drug policy from a punitive, criminal approach to "a humane, cost-effective, health approach."

"People suffering from addiction are more effectively treated with health care services than with criminal punishments," the bill reads. "A health care approach includes a health assessment to figure out the needs of people who are suffering from addiction, and it includes connecting them to the services they need."

What's insane about it? The real world clinical data definitely strongly supports the part of the bill that you pasted, even if that conflicts with your world view.

I wish the rest of the states would follow suit. The war on drugs was lost long ago.

Sarcasm here, but what’s insane about it? 85% of what cops deal with on a daily basis, outside traffic citation? Drug enforcement! Oh no, what’s gonna keep the “machine” known as our bogus criminal justice system going?

Personally Overall I still view drug use as a personal choice. The issue is not with drug use itself. If you want to destroy yourself physically and mentally using drugs, my attitude is “have at it”. the problem is, drug users turn to crime in other areas.

Drug users turn to crime... why? Because... well because drug use is itself a crime, and drugs, when outlawed, tend to be very expensive. It's a very complex social and medical issue, best solved by healthcare professionals, rather than by cops.

Recently, one of the scandajoovian nations, Finland, I think, solved their homelessness problem by... drum roll please... by housing the homeless, providing them with basic income, social services, and vocational training.

Yeah. How will they fill their prisons, now? Hint: they don't have anywhere near the prison capacity per capita that USA has. In fact, no other nation does.

When your only tool is a hammer, everything is a nail

If there were a way for an addict to get high and destroy their life while not adversely affecting anyone else then I'm perfectly okay with that.
My issue with drug addiction is that it's a massive burden on society and taxpayers. I have a problem with being subjected to anything against my will, especially taxes for social programs supporting adult addicts.

I wish Oregon the best, except Portland that place sucks.

Decriminalized small amounts. Larger amounts and selling are still a crime. So they are trying to help the addicts. We will see how it goes.

Have you ever been to downtown Portland prior to all the riots? The amount of homeless people living in tents all throughout is unbelievable, that number will certainly increase.
