The long term costs to society, of treating people as people rather than as potential members of for profit prison populations, is dramatically lower. Meaning, it's far cheaper, to society, in the long run, to treat addicts, and treat, house, and train the homeless, than to expect everyone to be John Wayne.

So, I'm wondering if this same line of reasoning, the "personal choices are ok until they cost me money" one, hold true for other personal choices, such as, day, obesity?

    How about alcohol?

    Gambling?

    Big, inefficient pickups "rolling coal"?

    Gun ownership?

    Yeah. I didn't think so.

In fact I have. It almost sounds like you agree, that we should help people, instead of treat them as outlaw cattle, ready to turn a buck in a for profit prison.

My bad. I meant as one of John Wayne's characters.

The rugged individual is almost entirely a myth.

In the event you would like a little history on the subject, this will give you a start. In other words this all has been tried before. Although it was opium in the dens that were popular, now I am sure they would expand their product line to include a whole raft of mind altering substances.
Of course the practice was outlawed over 100 years ago. Everything comes full circle.

The question remains. How do you handle the significant portion of society that would rather be non productive by remaining under the influence of mind altering substances? It would be far cheaper to just give the stuff to them than incarcerate them. But then what?

    I dont agree.

The problem is already out of control in Portland. I'm not saying that every one should be put in jail either. Just don't think what they are doing is going to help.

    Just my opinion
