Seperate yourself by communicating effectively on all ends of the transaction. Have all info about the load , dont be a clueless broker who cant answer basic questions like "what kind of freight is it?" Dimensions? Weight? Etc... this is very basic stuff but it gets annoying when a broker is trying to sell a load they know nothing about.

You need shovels and wheelbarrows to help stack and transport all the money you're going to make.......

Call a shipper or take them out for lunch and ask them about the loads they have the most trouble with. Then offer to take care of the loads for them. I hear guy on radio talk about this as way to get in the front door. Most people would want the best loads. You want help them by taking and covering the loads they have the most trouble with.

With the broker being JUST a middle man it's important that what little he has to do with the transaction is still important, therefore he should be well informed on what little he has.
If you can answer every question a driver has about the load you will have a long list of folks wanting to haul your customers loads. Transversely if you always have your customers loads hauled correctly you will get more customers.

Just for kicks I thought I would ask the trucker/carrier version of this question:

Hey guys, I'm new to trucking. I was wondering if I could borrow one of your trucks for a few weeks to see if I like it? If it works I'll buy my own but then I need one of you to drive it for awhile for me while I figure out the rest. You could drive for me while you're on vacation or something since I have no way to pay you.

JolliRoger, Lite bug, PPDCT and 2 others Thank this.

    Caution...this post contains sarcasm

Sure, what the heck...come on out. I'll put you in something with very little margin for error, difficult to make a profit at, and totally unforgiving as far as scheduling, driver performance, regulatory compliance and safety.
If it turns out alright you can have some of my customers. You can go ahead and do a lousy job and irritate them because there's a lot of customers out there, right?
I mean, I see those trucks go up and down the road every day so how hard can it really be?
You'll be learning at my expense and probably to my detriment but that's okay I don't really need to protect the business I've worked seven days a week, sometimes made less money than my employees, put up with all manner of aggravation, and stayed awake nights worrying about.
    C'mon down.
