Glasses

Keep them with you and put them on if you get stopped. Its what I've done for ten years. I cut my right eye about 15 years ago and the vision in it has gotten worse and worse, however my left eye has gotten better to compensate for it. I still see 20/20 with both eyes, but because I'm 20/50 in my right eye I have the restriction. I keep my glasses in the truck and put them on if I get stopped and have never had an issue. Even had a few times where I didn't get them on, officer asked and I was honest with him, no tickets for it. I've intermittently passed one or the other test over the years and had the card and license not match, no problems.

 

You can get a DOT physical from another doctor and see what happens. Just let them know that you think your eye test from the previous place was administered wrong.

If they help you see better, what’s the fuss?
Lastly, if your current med card says you need them..you need them.

 

My CSA had two violations for 391.11(b)(4) "Driver not physically qualified"

In both cases their CDL's have no eyeglass restrictions BUT it was noted on their Physicals and they were caught without their glasses which is an Out of Service violation

 

I recently went for a full exam off my eyes(non DOT,pure medical)
Turns out that with age eyes can improve in a certain field and get worse in another.
For example my righteye has in improved in it's far sight but the short or near sight has gotten worse.

I thought the requirement was corrected in both eyes to like 20/30 or something. So 20/50 in one eye should be a failure and require an exemption which I heard takes 6 months to get.

The entire thing makes no sense. It should be corrected in both to whatever then your side perception to whatever degree.

And their computer does tell them. I asked about that. It also tells them in about 5 mins after you’ve been pulled over should you get pulled over again that you were just pulled over. All put into a federal computer. Thank you Big Brother.

20/40 is the pass/fail line. I have 20/50 in my right, 20/15 in my left, 20/20 with both. I am required to wear glasses. I think its dumb because I'm never going to ride down the road with my left eye closed/covered, but thats what my license and med card say, so its what I'm supposed to do.

As far as getting an exemption, I'm not sure what you mean. I'm under the impression it is black and white. You're either restricted to corrective lenses or not. 20/40 you're good, 20/45 and you're wearing glasses, but you can retest and get it removed if you pass. I've been caught not wearing them 3 times, but they never made an issue of it. I was just told to put them on or asked to be shown that I had them. I found if youre honest and not irate, they typically will cut you a lot of slack.
