Hi Guys My Compressor gear shaft have broken teeth, to the gear attached to the compressor. The mechanic took it out with the air compressor. He ordered new air compressor which arrived without the gear attached to it, he ordered the gear which will arrive tomorrow.
He didn't test the air compressor and my question is, is it necessary to change both compressor/gear or just the broken gear. any advice/experience appreciated. Thanks'

Its necessary to do more than that, the mechanic needs to find out the exact damage this gear caused on the gear train and if anything else is messed up, did this happen cuz the compressor got stuck or is there another reason this happened if he puts it back and you start it up probably the new gear is going to get messed up as well

More than likely the bull gear backed off and caused the air compressor gear to get chewed up like that. I'm guessing you heard the engine start to rattle like crazy when the compressor was building air. I'm in the middle of the same issue with a 2009 d13 with 650,000 miles

its a common issue with the d13 pretty big job you have to pull trans, rear motor mounts and flywheel housing off

If you are paying for this out of pocket i'm very sorry chances are if you caught it in time the compressor itself is ok mine is im just replacing the gear
-
Have your mechanic reach in and grab the bullgear (which is what drives the air compressor) and wiggle it it should be tight with no play (they are set with .004 backlash) mine was very loose as in wobbled like crazy and rubbed against the flywheel housing pretty badly

remove the nut lift up compressor by gear and wack the shaft or use an extractor and it will pop out make sure you use locktite when you put it back and check the back gear.
