If the deadhead out ate profit it didn't pay enough to go there. Some people make a living going to "dead zones" all the time. There's no such thing as a dead zone. That truck has wheels, go to the money.

I rather take great money into a dead zone, deliver the next morning, eat breakfast if there ain’t #### to reload that fits what I like to do I’m pointing it towards the house and play the waiting game all over again. Sitting truly frustrates me I like to be rolling and trucking having fun and making money. With the way it’s been tho I’ve learned it’s better to wait for that big dollar load then try and struggle and string loads together. I may go broke 1 day doing this, my days of bouncing from ok load To ok load are over. If I go somewhere for really good money and there’s a ok load going somewhere I’d like to go, I will take it though.

The whole point for some of us to have own authority is just that - to dispatch yourself.

You can dispatch yourself without having your own authority.
Do you think you can make more yourself than using a really good dispatcher.

I dispatched myself leased to a company, I saw rate cons and negotiated directly with customers and brokers, its how I learned and I was most likely the highest earning owner operator they ever had. I partialed into MN from Long Island/NJ area once for over $8000 they couldn’t believe what I put together lol. That was before kids and when I didn’t mind going to MN lol.

All the response to this thread is the reason they love what they are doing. These guys do not work, they have found what they like so they never have to work. I see you are starting out sometime the learning curve can be difficult as in my case. I just got my MC number after I leased on with a guy just starting out after I realized he didn’t know how or where to dispatch. I hired a startup company ( who had failed in his trucking attempt) we learned together. I heard guys on the road say nobody can dispatch me better than me, which is true after you know what you are doing. If you do not know the lanes you need to hook up with someone who does. I suggest watching all the people who responded I have listened and learned from them. There are so many people that do not know and will lead you to a dead end. But the guys on this thread are giving both experience and knowledge. They will share negotiation strategy, timing, management, maintenance, thru their writing. All it will take is a little time to search them on this forum. I did not know this existed until 2014 it could have helped me tremendously. Good Luck

I appreciate you insight, you make money despite “ dead zones” turn a perceived negative into a positive.

I never stumbled across a carrier that would allow full freedom, not that I was looking for one very hard either.
Yes. After 4 years on my own, I'd like to think that I know better what I want for myself than a dispatch company. Especially for one truck operation.
