Got a company who wants me to drive for them, but she stressed that they do run into NYC, downtown Chicago, and Mass REGULARLY. They run reefers, dryvan, curtainside.

I have never run these areas in a truck. Tell me your experiences? Is it just nasty drivers a-hole receivers and shippers, or horrific dock bumping scenarios?

I've run flatbeds but that is pretty much pull through, a little backing into wide areas, and maybe some minor city driving to get into places.

    What say you?

I wouldn't do it. The pay might look good but you'll spend all your time stuck in heavy traffic on the worst streets you can imagine.

Thats sorta what I'm thinking. From here to NY or Mass or Chicago or St Louis wouldnt be a bad drive (they get about 2300 miles per week, home most weekends), but having never done deliveries in congested cities, I'm wondering if I could pick that up fast enough to be safe. Last thing I need is to trash someone's car or the side of an old building with a loading dock in NYC.

Hmmm..... .41/m for curtainside, .38/mi for loading and loading vans, etc.... .35 base. $20 for live load/unload, ......

Come on now. You're a driver, that means you go where they tell you. You don't wimp out because the load takes you to NYC/Ma./downtown Chi. Are you going to tell your grandkids you were a trucker (kinda, sorta) or, a trucker, one that drove in ice/snow, went to NY/Chi/Ma/ etc? You either jump in feet first or get a desk job.

I did St. Louis to NYC for a year and a half on a dedicated run. It is not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. I quit that because I started to drive team again, and that just wasn't enough miles for the two of us.

I only did one run a week, made good money, and while I don't love going into the city, it isn't all that bad. I don't care for Boston, but then, it is all doable.

I am a woman, drove in there alone every week and NEVER had any issues. I did go to the same places all the time, so that made it easy.

I worked 4 days, off 3 and loved it.

Mass isn't really that bad. There are some tight places up there but overall it's ok. NYC on the other hand can be a bit challenging for someone who isn't use to it. With the exception of Long Island most of the places you will go to are tight to get into. Plus backing can be a little tricky. I live up here so it's really no big deal to me. But i'm use to it.

I almost prefer NYC to Boston or even Philly. My trainer was from NYC, and his first tip to me was "don't get lost in all the signage"; in other words, keep your mind on what you're looking for, especially up there.

My other experience is often when a company says "we tend to run so-and-so a lot" or "we seldom go to xxxx", it's usually an overstatement.

If the job is otherwise appealing to you, I'd go for it.

    Good luck!

will they tell you what kind of freight it is for dry and reefer? is it t/l or ltl? stops of furniture in brooklyn will drive you crazy, but a t/l of diapers to places in the bronx can be cake. it all depends. will they pay lumpers?

my experience has been with philly, then ny, but no manhattan. as with any major city, what route you take and when going in and out makes all the difference in terms of traffic.

Been in lower manhattan and the bronx and both places were really tricky getting through there and making some of the corners with 20 cars trying to pass you on the right when you're swinging to make your turn. Once we got in lower manhattan we had to wait a few minutes for a straight truck to pull out so we could park on the street, we were there for 2 minutes and a cop walked up wrote us a ticket for 180 bucks because the tail of the trailer was hanging in the road about 5 feet. We tried to argue that we were waiting for this guy to move and it was our first time in the city but he said your gonna cause gridlock and walked off. Then we got hand loaded off of the street, took about 3 hours to load, took about 30 minutes to get off the side and back into the street. Then we got lost in the detours by where the towers were at ended up coming up on a bridge that said 12'6". So we pulled over cause there was like 10 cops standing there chatting so we asked em how to get outta there and they watched the bridge for us and we cleared. Then he told us how to get back to the interstate then said "Now get the heck outta my city there trucker" NYC was definitely an experience, and im glad I went there. But you would never catch me there in a truck again, heck probably not even in a four wheeler. The city is not very friendly to a sleeper truck and a 53' trailer. Probably wouldnt be to bad with a day cab and a pup. I think thats how they should run freight there is set up a bunch of warehouses outside of the city and have local drivers pick it up and bring it there.

Have no problem going at it. Just asking for everyone's experiences doing it. If I decide to go with that company, I'd like a little heads up..... in order to stay safe.
