If my math holds, you're looking at what, $84.40-$90ish/trip. 15 minutes to load, 20 miles to drive, and then who knows how long you're gonna sit at the offload, but figure 15-20 min there. That's an hour before you even jump back for the return run.

Seems like this is a recipe for bad juju to me, but I don't run dumps, so I have no idea if this is what they're getting paid. I can't imagine turning and burning more than 1 every 1.5-2 hours or so. $450-$600 for a day's worth of work seems a little light....

The players in this work are firmly established. Somebody is looking to get in thinking they see a fast easy buck.

That's my read on it. I've had a few folks over the years ask me to quote them for dumps. "Don't know it. I'll ask." I ask, and people clam up, or are so tied up with work that they won't get to it.

Thus, I do not run dumps, and have no real interest in it.

It sounds like a small timer who got a chance at what he considers a big-time haul. All he can see so far that he recognizes is the amount to be hauled. He got a whiff of the big time and it's got him scrambling. Somebody gave him a shot at it just to see what he'd do,
He doesn't know how to find subs, he doesn't know how to figure his rate, he doesn't have any idea of the actual daily tonnage targets and on top of all that he's "trying to pay every week".
If he hasn't already figured out the kind of hauling he wants to do is probably the most competitive, cut-throat, and quickest way to lose money in the trucking business he'll learn soon enough.
If the job was a money maker it would have been snapped up by a local with the knowledge and equipment to do it right. The good jobs are never advertised, they go word of mouth amongst the good-ol'- boy network and get settled over a few drinks at the Elk's club or during lunch at the Rotary.
I wish him well. I don't think he's any kind of crook or scam artist...just a guy with ambition who's in way over his head. He's being used and he doesn't know it yet.
