And does your last post mean that if I am a company driver who is paid percentage and I have no legal right to see the freight contract (and I think you may be right about that BTW) , what would stop my employer from being dishonest with me about what the load paid? They could tell me the load paid 1/2 of what they actually charged and how would I ever know I was cheated? that isn't right!

 

Your company really doesn't want you to unload it. You stand a high chance of getting hurt, which would cost them workers comp and legal fees. So, they pay the lumpers by saying they will pay you the driver a very small amount.

As for company drivers paid on %, you are relying on the company to be honest, and for the most part we know that a lot of them are dishonest. There is a lot more to the cost of shipping than what is on the BOL, just ask any O/O how much paper work there is.

If the load is easy and only a few pallets or if they are lite then I will make a few extra bucks and unload it.

This is company policy here at werner to provide this information, but when i find out the lumper fee from the shipper, i also ask for the name and phone number for the recieving manager along with the EIN/SSN for the lumper, and send it on the qualcomm message. I dont think they actually call the customer, but i sure dont get any problem at all.

Heh, i was at C&S the other day, i asked "and can i get the name/number for the recieving manager too?" ...the girl is like "why?"....i was like "so they know im not doing it myself and taking the money!". haha.

 

I agree that we should be paid more for hauling hazmat, however, carriers DO have extra expenses and should get part of it

Ducttape reimbursements
Hazmat endorsement and TSA background check reimbursements
Hazmat training for drivers requierd by FMCSRs
Permits that are in your permit book for hazmat that you probably didnt notice.
Atleast for my company, payroll for some guy that you have to talk to any time you haul any amount of hazmat.

How about canadian loads? I know they arent doing it for free.

Also, i know werner gets and does not pay out on detention pay on some loads. I think they should get PART of it, since they arent making money on a truck that isnt rolling, but what about the driver.....?

I have racked up about 30 hours in waiting games this week.....

 

OK 5 plts at a winn dixie in LA. 140.00 because they had to break it down to 10 plts to fit in shortage. My driver said it took them 20 mins to unload it and re stack
it. He was in and out in less than 1 hour. 140.00 for 2 guys for 20 mins work.

Or your driver could have done it, hurt his back and cost you dearly on your workers comp. Which one would have been cheaper in the long run. Also if your driver had to log it it could have saved him 30 mins on his on duty time at the end of the week. I know 30 mins. doesn't sound like much but it adds up at the end of the week when you just have enough time to make a load and do it legally.

 

They would not let driver do it, he did ask. and as far as time goes, I have to trust my guys/carriers to do it right.
