Why do some owner operators work for nothing? Why is there lease purchase? Because people are dumb and will not listen to reason.. If nobody uses paid parking it will go away.

Yes. That's correct logic. If you could pay for the privilege to travel in less time or park where otherwise the lots would become full then I don't see why not having such an option. If the parking fees are low enough so that the parking lots are becoming full then increasing the fees would deter some and the maybe a few spots would still be available.
The logic does not apply to increases of insurance and other fees because such increases do not offer any privileges or conveniences in return ...or perhaps a little in a sense that they would also serve as an entry barrier for prospective new owners operator trying to create more competition. Those increases are typically for new entrants, not me.

I plan trips, and part of that planning is knowing how far I have to go, and where I'll be at night on the route there. If I get into an area I'm not familiar with, the last thing I want to be doing is figuring out where I'll be taking my 10 hour break, and it won't be on an off ramp, or an unsafe area. I pay for reserved parking so I know that spot will be waiting for me when I get there.

When I'm sitting in my paid spot at truck stops, I get to watch what I call the nightly circus. The sun goes down, and the solar powered drivers pile into the place looking for a spot for the night. Drivers fight over spots, bad drivers back into other trucks, and I just sit there in my paid spot with the other drivers who pay for parking just laughing at all the mayhem going on.

The overall attitude that anyone is entitled to free parking is simply wrong. Free parking is a privilege... a mercy offered by a property owner.

Easy it used to be, a truck stop was that a truck stop. Everyone ate meals out of one. Plus spend cash on other things in them. Today 90% only use the parking lot and bathroom. Then the parking lot is full of trucks. But 90% of those trucks are eating food out of the truck. Most will not spend anything other then a coffee in a truck stop.
So if you own a giant parking lot. And everyone is using that lot for free. What would you do with your parking lot??

Me I would block it off or charge to park it in. Bet you would do the same.

Why don’t you drive for free? Because someone is paying you for a service. They charge, and someone is willing to pay for that service. Don’t like it, don’t pay it. Simple.

In all fairness the Haji bread and bomb with truck parking out back near my house is an absolute dump with holes in the lot that could swallow your truck. They have no business charging anyone for anything. But yes, the days of free parking at the 76 Truck stop are long gone. Hopefully everyone is smart enough to figure it into there operating costs. Unlikely though.

Well the ta/petro truckstop let you use their ultra one credits to purchase a reserve spot or could even use your points. So I would say most people don't use actual money to reserve spots at the ta/petro.

That's not for the reserved parking, that's for the few that charge to use the lot, like Petros in Bordentown and Atlanta. I did reserved in Atlanta, and was informed that the cost of the reserved parking doesn't go towards the cost of general parking. My haircut did though.
