CHP doesn't bother. CARB doesn't have enforcement at scales most times, so...

Stick with the 2ws that you selected, it’s a very solid choice. Anyone who runs Def wishes they still produced motors like the 2ws. As far as hp setting, that’s been a topic of great speculation and long debates. 550hp 2050 is a good setting, once you get to 600 and above it starts to cost $$$. You start losing mpg, and begin to lose longevity on critical engine parts. With that being said, many have set the 2ws motor to 750-800 hp with zero issue. But you can’t get there without aftermarket turbo, exhaust manifold, tune, injectors, and fuel trim for those injectors.

should be a sweet glider when your done with it, and California will Def welcome a truck like that. Run in and out of California with trucks from the Mid 80’s hasn’t been a issue. Good luck with your build.

I agree with @Largecar359 I have a 2ws in my 388 and she runs awesome. Not sure exactly where she’s set but pulling the 6% grade up the Continental divide at 103,000 pounds she manages 32-33mph with 3:58 gears and 11r22.5’s. Running average MPG of 5.1 but I pull pneumatic trailers so spend a lot of time idling at 900rpm running the blower to unload my trailers.

2WS, with a tune, include an upgraded Borg Warner turbo. You should see 7mpg with no problems. Use the extra horse wisely.

Had a 1lw 550/1850 run 1.5 million. Blew head gasket due to dropped liner bottom end was good. 2ws 550/1850 should be plenty of power with excellent longevity. Just my .02 good luck with whatever you choose.

If pulling 80 k I’d go with the 550 version . It seems like everyone I know with a turned up cat is popping head gaskets . The blocks have a couple of decades on them.

Are you getting a cat engine ... with a warranty ... from cat?

There are no 2ws stock files over 550hp and 1850 tq. Your rear ratio is about perfect for running the west.

My 2ws loves life between 1400 and 1600 rpm. 1500 and above for cruising when loaded in the hills, don't lug an older cat. If you cruise it in cali going slow at 1350 on the flats you will be amazed at your fuel economy .... after you get rid of you warranty and the required low nox tune.

How does out of state plates avoid carb?

now we have a new government coming in, California may return to enforcing carb regulations for trucks, and that crap will, not might but will go across the country.
