OLd guy on board:biggrin_2559::biggrin_2559: and with the new trucks you can bypass the dpf though it is very illeagal to do so. Yes it will smoke like a freight train though. I have a friend that did this to a new dodge ram p/u, and it all works on the same princeaple.

I have a 06 classic with 6 in. straights on it and they arent bad if you know how to drive. If its your truck and its your repair bill you should know how to drive it like a business. Plus you get a lil boost in fuel mileage

My W900 had straights on it when I got it...After a month of listening to all of that noise I put a stock muffler back on. No loss of performance at all like all of the idiots claimed I would have.

    Just a lot less racket!

If disliking being woke up in the middle of the night at home or in my truck is being on a high horse, your right I sit on a very high horse and any self-center driver thinks that we want to be woke up is stupid. If you want straight pipes and can control the noise in parking lots or near anywhere that distrubs people peace and quiet then go for it. Do you really think that people trying to enjoy a day off working around their house want to hear your noisy truck go by on a quiet Sunday afternoon then your more childish and self-center then I thought.

I got over the shinny two ninety years ago, if you don't know what a shinny two ninety is then ask a experienced driver that has been out here for more then 6 months.Yes, you are right I drive a fleet truck and I can only go 65 mph with no chrome wheels or fancy straight pipes. I'm more into take home pay and not trying to impress others with a noisy truck. I have been out here on the road for over 30 years and have driven about every make and model with lots of chrome and big engines that would run triple digits but I have never driven a truck with straight pipes that distrubs my fellow drivers while trying to sleep.
Yes, I go to several truck shows every year to look at the chromed out trucks and enjoy the beauty of them and I have a lot of respect for drivers that drives and maintains a truck that looks like a work of art going down the road. But if this same driver wakes me up with loud pipes then I will still think of him as a self-centered idiot driving a work of art. Drive that work of art with a set of baffles that puts out a low soft rumble that lets every driver knows your there but not loud enough to wake drivers up at night and I will have all kinds of respect for you and your work of art. I passed a driver one evening and he was driving one of the most beautiful trucks I have ever seen on the road and he was only doing maybe 60 to 65 mph. I pulled into a truck stop and he came in for some dinner and we set down together and it so refreshing to hear this driver talk about how he could save money driving like a professional driver, he actually bought all the chrome on his truck with savings of driving 62 mph. The way he dressed showed that he cared about what people thought about him and his truck. We set and talked about how he ran his business operations and why some fail at the trucking business, he knew every expense that it would cost to run a load and he never took a load that paid less then operating cost. To set down with a driver with a great attitude and business minded was so refreshing, so different from all of the whining and crying you hear most drivers. This driver still drives 62 mph and I see him at truck shows about once or twice a year and he still has this outstanding professional attitude. So if you see this large car work of art going down the doing 62 mph and looking happy then give him a salute because he is a pure pro driver. One of his basic believes were, and I had heard it before, "lack of planning on their part will never constitute a emergency on my part", speaking of dispatchers that is. Happy trails to all.

Data man...you thoughts run true on the pure drive professional stand point. I salute men like that and they are becoming harder and harder to find.

As for the straight pipes...yeah some of them sound good, but they cause more harm than anything else. This is the reason all of the towns have noise ordinances anymore and some people have a negative outlook on our image...why give them more of a reason to dislike us. Also straight pipes don't offer much of a performance gain with todays engines. A high flow muffler will do a better job than a big set of straight that many guys are actually installing. I will be first to say that I love the sound of a mechanical CAT with straight pipes and a rough idle...but I wouldn't want to drive it everyday.

I love the sound of straight pipes as well, but I agree there are situations where they are not appropriate. Some friends of mine are into muscle cars, and many of them have a setup on their cars where the exhaust goes through cats and mufflers for on-road use. When they're on the track, they flip a switch on the dash that dumps the exhaust straight out from a point just past the headers.

I've been wondering if I can do something similar on a big truck. Essentially run my exhaust through my stacks for daily driving, but diverting it out a straight pipe (possibly a weedburner setup) when I want the sound.

Some companies do make 5" Y pipes and butterfly valves (called cutouts), so it should be possible. But the butterfly valve bolts to the end of the Y using a flange; I'm not sure how I'd go about attaching a further section of pipe to lead the exhaust out behind the truck so it doesn't go straight into the cab.

    Thoughts?
