I want to answer the original question of why anyone would want to lease a truck.
I want to lease a truck for several reasons.
My options are... Lease or keep on being a company driver.
My options are not: Save up $30,000 & buy a truck; or pay cash for a truck; or save up $5,000 & buy a truck. I have no substantial savings. At my age, I am unwilling to save up for 2 or 3 years. I am, by nature, an entrepreneur. I know that if I am not building my dream, I'm building someone else's dream.
I know that as a company driver, yes I am paying for repairs, fuel, maintenance & taxes on any truck I drive. As a lease operator, I'll just be making a few more cents per mile doing it. Plus, I'll be getting paid to learn to be a successful O/O under my own authority. The company will be my safety net and cover some expenses and help me be compliant with state & federal laws.
One of the things I have already learned is that insurance is more expensive in the first year and that insurance rates are cheaper in a company lease truck. Spending a year in a lease truck will save me money on insurance in the long run.
I do not plan to ever pay off my truck, although I might. I do plan to purchase a truck apart from the lease and either drive it or hire a driver and lease it to another company.
I don't mind saying I'm almost 60 years old and have nothing in reserve for my retirement, thanks to my X husband. My goal is to build a small fleet of 5 to 10 trucks in the next 3 years.
And although that may not happen, it is as Les Brown says:
Shoot for the moon. If you miss, at least you'll end up among the stars.
P.S.
A large part of my plan includes educating myself on every aspect of trucks and operating my business. I am already enrolled in a course on fuel taxes which will save me thousands of dollars per year as an O/O. -
Or find a driving job that kicks ### and pays well .....I know my guys are close to 80k a year with full benefits available vacation time and a 401k match .....still have zero turnover ...
Use something like that as a springboard to save up for a truck of your own because I promise you if you can not make it on 80 and save up enough for a starter truck you are taking on a crazy amount of risk because my first year way back when I barely cleared 40 with all the things I didn't count on . What you say sounds good, bigdad, but I keep hearing things like:
You need 2 years experience to get the best paying jobs, and...
You need a clear PSP to get hired on with the best companies.
"The best" companies being those like you describe in your post.
I have neither and the longer I stay where I am, the worse that PSP is going to get. I average 1300 miles per week where I am now, & that is with always running my clock out & always declining home time.
I suspect that I am being discriminated against because I am a female, but I cannot base that on anything other than the bald conclusion that if 1300 miles per week is what the average diver gets here, there wouldn't be 40 trucks running at all times. I was told by the driver who referred me, & by the owner, that I would normally bring home $1,000/wk. Instead, I bring home 6-800 & if I'm lucky I do net $1000 one time per month.
Thus is my first job back after leaving trucking for 8 years. I have almost 20 years driving experience. I am extremely intelligent (because I enjoy learning new things). I know I have what it takes to run a trucking business. I do not have what it takes to sit and wonder why I'm not being assigned the miles I could easily be driving. -
