Looks like she’s working as designed. Letter ride. HAHAHA
Trucking in Tennessee Thanks this. -

I don't think that one worked quite as designed.
-
It worked as designed & built. Engineers back in the day didn't adequately account for the wind loads on the side of the bridge. Emphasis was given to making the bridge deck as light as possible to handle the expected weight of vehicles. The bridge did that. But the bridge deck was not stiff enough and the wind blowing agains the sides of the deck caused more twisting than expected and at certain speeds the twisting matched a critical harmonic frequency of the bridge which increased stress until eventually the bridge collapsed. Bridge decks are now usually some sort of box structure or T-shaped structure for strength & resistance to twisting.
BTW, the car seen in the video had a dog inside. Once the rocking & rolling got very bad the car's driver tried to drag his dog out and flee to safety. The dog bit the driver and the driver left. RIP.not4hire, magoo68 and Trucking in Tennessee Thank this. -
I can’t see the vids but it must be the Tacoma Narrows bridge. That guy who tried to rescue the dog was not its owner. He was a local college professor, and the dog was pretty spooked at this point. Plus the dog, I think his name was Pudgy or Tubby or something like that, only had 3 legs. Why its owner didn’t bring him out in the first place is unknown but my dog would have been under my arm like a football and I’m OJ.
I don’t understand the engineering details of the collapse, but at least I know these very important details lol. -
So where's the ride?

I think they called that bridge "Galloping Gertie" or something to that effect.mjd4277, magoo68, Roberts450 and 1 other person Thank this.
