Are you a post 9/11 vet? If so, I'd read up on the MGIB before I gave away all of that cash. Post 9/11 vets get the GI Bill plus a E-5 BAH w/dep. That's an extra $2k a month...on top of your tuition assistance.

MossyOak... You need to really read into the deal they have with using your GI Bill, it's no benefit to you. Especially if you think you will ever attend college. Trucking is not for everyone. Most companies will reimburse you for the school. Overall I still think TMC is a good company to start out with, with that being said I just got a call today for a new job so I'm out of here. Giving my two week on friday. They have made to many changes in such a short time and I just can't deal with it. The ez pass being gone is my biggest killer. and no one will give a real good answer on it, you can ask and they will ignore. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

    Mossy,

KMLAQ is right on target. Dont get caught up on the moment and use your hard earned college money to off set pay. If you have not yet looked into the Post 9/11 GI Bill, please do. Both the MGIB and the Post 9/11 GI Bill have their own unique advantages...... as well as disadvantages.

Whatever your decision......BOL to you and thanks for your service.

Thank you all for you post. Yes I am a post 9/11 vet. I was under the impression that the OJT from the G.I. Bill didn't take away from the college money, I will have look into it, and maybe go with another company. I grew up in a truck driving family and I love driving I hated graduating from my cdl school because i wasn't going to be driving everyday. My wife grew up in a truck driving family to so she completley understands.

    Mossyoak,

I was in the same boat! I'm a third generation driver. My brother is a o/o. I started with TMC after doing a lot of research. There hometime is excellent, the pay use to be great. I was making more at this then as a Sergeant. They have just made so many changes in the past couple of months, I would have a hard time telling anyone to come over here. Today for instance I'm under an oversized load. I have my permit for TN but non for NC. Safety tells me to go ahead amd run it. They still won't explain the ez pass deal. They took it away a couple of months ago and now you can either pay tolls out of your pocket and wait for rembursement or get a comdata check which if you dont turn reciepts in exactly right or right away they still hold money back. I still live not far from Lejeune and I go to NY every week. it cost me anywhere to 150 to 300 a week in tolls. They cut our trucks back to 62 which must be slower then everyone else's 62 cause the only thing I pass in this truck is time. I'm also a trainer and I have a great truck an 07 with just over 250,000 but my last trainee got a truck an 05 with almost 500,000 but they have 07's for sale with less then 300,000 I think that is a bad sign why sell a newer truck unless they need the money. I expect more changes to come. It pains me to even talk bad about TMC because I was just as proud as working for them as I was as a Marine. they have always been good to me, but make no mistake this is not the same company I started with. I understand the industry is hurting as a whole, but how much do the drivers have to sacrifice in order for the company to prosper! it's still a great job and I wouldnt do anything else. Keep looking you'll find a good place to start and you might have to try 1 or 2 companies to find your fit. I would hold out on using your GI Bill. I didnt use mine and still made good money from the get go and had my tuition reimbursed. Theres also grants out there for vets to get your tuition payed for it just takes research. Best of luck.

    Mossy,

Look long and hard at using your GI Bill for this "apprenticeship". Unless I am mistaken, once your start to draw your MGIB payments it will start to reduce your overall entitlement.

    Take myself for example.....

I used Tuition Assistance and MGIB Top Up to cover the cost of going to CDL School. My Top Up payment was equal to a month of MGIB. The letter I have from the VA indicates that I have 35 months of MGIB eligibility remaining. If I choose to switch to the Post 9/11 GI Bill I will have 35 months to complete a degree program.

Here is a link to a great site that will explain the differences between the two programs.

    http://www.newgibill.org/

Also... do you draw a normal paycheck for all work completed in addition to your GI Bill payments or is your pay at a reduced rate since you are drawing GI Bill payments. How are you benefiting from this using your GI Bill and (most importantly) how is the company benefiting. In other words you should be the one benefitting more. Quite frankly I rank these "Aprenticeship Programs" these companies offer right up there with the lease purchase deal.

I have often had my guys (I am still active duty) ask me for guideance with this type of stuff and we sit down and analyze it from all angles. You worked long, hard, and sacrificed alot for this entitlement and while it is yours to do with what you choose, I just want you make an informed decision. :)

Also.... keep in mind Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill) does not cover Aprenticeships so you will have to convert to the MGIB..... or if you have the MGIB and you convert to the Post 9/11 GI Bill....that conversion is irrevokeable.

just got my truck 2 weeks ago 06' with 500,000 and i was a little depressed because it looks like absolute #### inside.. dash is all black and discolored and fading/peeling.... everyone else got (5 others) 07' with all under 325,000.. guess i picked the short stick :(

But all that said Ive been running hard and getting #### good payin loads had two this week that grossed over $900 to the truck and one $700. Ive also had 2 bad one menards DC that took 9hrs to load and 350mi to get there and only paid me $65... take the good with the bad...so far i have no regrets in my decision...im sure after a few months it can change...:biggrin_25517:
