I've been told that KAG isn't bad on the merchant gas side. A lot of people seem to think they suck with the fuel hauling. I can see them wanting to diversify away from fuel, a lot of people seem to think that the future is not so bright in that particular segment of the industry.

Remember when all the big buildings, schools, and government facilities heated with oil? We used to run hard from Chico to Medford and KFalls with heating oil all winter. LOL...not to mention the winter wonderland in Hayfork, Covelo, Hyampom, and a dozen more.
I think a young guy starting out today will still be able to make a career out of tankers but he probably won't stay with one outfit for thirty years like we've done in the past.
Buyouts and mergers aren't anything new and I see a lot of that on the horizon. The old days of companies slobbing along and making it on volume are gone. They have to be lean and mean to survive now.
KAG, for all their faults, isn't run by dummies. They can see that the real future in tankers isn't in petroleum but in chemicals and food grade liquids.
I don't know anything much about chemical hauling but I know some of the rates are really good.
This business has changed so much and so fast since I've been in it...I'd like to come back in about fifty years and see where it's gone.MYSTYKRACER and Rugerfan Thank this. -
The freaking swift of the tanker world strikes again huh. These ####ers got their hands in everything tanker related and usually it's at the drivers expense. From petroleum, chem, foodgrade, to cryogenics, it's never enough. Of course Goldman Sachs was at the helm till 2015 bleeding all the competition, then buying them up. How they are not a monopoly is beyond me.
401-Alex, RockinChair, Speed_Drums and 1 other person Thank this. -
I had lunch yesterday with a couple of friends who think we are all going to be driving electric cars in a couple of years. I say BS. I recently watched the new Michael Moore film, "Planet of the Humans" and he really calls out the lies and hypocrisy of the whole "Green" movement. I think we will be hauling gas and diesel for a long time, just less of it. Maybe more hydrogen and CNG/LNG. Economies and industries change along with the climate and everything else.
Back in April I asked to be laid off my fuel hauling job. I could see that they didn't really need me when they hired me and with the pandemic I was just taking hours away from guys with families. They still aren't keeping all their drivers busy and I predict that they will have to downsize their local operation at some point. I moved across the yard to hauling bulk carbon dioxide to support the commercial cannabis industry which is growing like crazy. I don't know how long this will last, but I think it will get me through to retirement. Best job I ever had, most money & one of the nicest trucks.kemosabi49 and REO6205 Thank this. -
I worked for Beneto when KAG bought them out. I like tanker work but I'll never work for KAG again. They will put profits over employees every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
I listened more then once my terminal manager on the phone arguing to get supplies and replace equipment. We did six loads per shift so each truck did twelve loads per day. Stuff wears out.
The investors come first. They promised a 9% return and when they didn't meet it they cut pay by $2 an hour. Many stayed do to having a good schedule but enough left that they reinstated the pay. Then they called it a raise and expected gratitude. I find it hard to work for a company I do not trust.Last edited: Dec 21, 2020
