Every year, CVSA International Roadcheck runs for three days, inspecting tens of thousands of commercial trucks in North America. This year, 12,254 trucks were placed out of service along with 3,247 drivers.

Roadcheck was postponed from its normal time in May due to COVID-19. Instead, it ran from September 9th through the 11th. Over three days, 50,151 inspections were conducted throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The vast majority are conducted by Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance-certified inspectors in the U.S.

During the 50,151 inspections, 12,254 vehicles were placed out of service for equipment violations. That’s a 24.4% OOS rate. The most common violations were over brake systems (3,163), tires (2,326), lights (1,650), cargo securement (1,586), and brake adjustment (1,567).

In addition, 3,247 drivers were placed out of service for failing to meet requirements. Drivers were most commonly put out of service for Hours of Service violations (1,128); “other” including moving violations, cell phone use, etc (709); driving with the wrong class license (687); false logs (455); and driving with a suspended license (141).

If they really want to make the roads safer then they should go ahead and do more of this. And track those OOS trucks for follow-ups.

You see about 20 white Volvos every day headed to Atlanta with their DOT number taped to the door.

Around Chicagoland sometimes it’s a piece of cardboard that doesn’t match the paint job of the truck!
