Uhhh no. When going down hill. One is supposed to "snub" the speed. Select a gear one lower than what you used to climb the hill. Thhen using your brakes you snub the speed. If the truck is primarily going at 40mph. You use the brakes to remove the speed from 45 down to 40. Then release the brakes and let the engine keep the truck from racing down the hill.
Constant pressure on the brakes will lead to brake fade. One should avoid this at all costs!Cattleman84, MACK E-6, Rideandrepair and 6 others Thank this. -

U could get down a hill with 10psi or less on the brakes... that quarry i ran up to this summer. Coming down loaded in 3rd gear.. For some reason my jake dont work below 5th gear so we rode the brakes all the way down the mountain. 5-10psi .. Got to the bottom to tighten the chains and check the brakes. Drums were hot but never did start smoking... i guess thats how they used to do it before jake breaks.... Took a long ### time to get down the mountain though. Like almost an hour maybe 8 miles total.... Think being inthe right gear was key. 4th was probably the gear id use if the jake worked..... Think its some setting that needs to be changed inthe computerGod prefers Diesels, Rideandrepair, Dale thompson and 6 others Thank this.

Jakes should be mechanical. It is the action of a cam that pops the exhaust valve before fuel would be injected.
One can even make the jake work by reving the engine and side stepping the accelerator.Rideandrepair, stuckinthemud, LoSt_AgAiN and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yes but the computer controls the switch that turns it on and i think in my computer wont let it turn on below 5th.. And it will only turn on in 5th gear at 1800 rpms.. Quite annoying... but i think somebody on this forum said they had the same thing on their truck and it was a computer setting that just needs to be changed.God prefers Diesels, thelushlarry, Cattleman84 and 7 others Thank this.

I ran all over the country in a Burlington motors cabover with no engine brakes. When I came over to ABF we didn't have them either. Been down all the nasty mountains with no engine brake, it wasn't that bad.thelushlarry, austinmike, Rideandrepair and 7 others Thank this.
