This might be the most meaningful answer in the whole thread, although I don't see why YRC and Old Dominion could not just allow owner-ops with newer trucks only.
Why do the LTL companies want lightweight trucks, so they don't be overweight?
Why do most LTLs not hire owner-operators?

We have city drivers making over $ 80.000 a year.
Dock workers can pretty much write their own check,
The shortage of workers amounts to lots of overtime pay. -
YRC uses different truck load carriers in different parts of the country.

If someone was writing down your trailer numbers, it would be safe to say you were at a union company. If a man was sitting home rested and the company ran you before their own man he just got paid for the run around.13 Speed Road Ranger and truckdriver31 Thank this.

It also depends on the terminal and their service area.
Typically, the city guys are solar powered and don’t want to run too far away, so few of the peddle hands may want to take the long runs.
But if you have a peddle run that will take you 100 or more miles from the yard $100K in a year is not unattainable.truckdriver31 and LPjunior1970 Thank this. -
Saia uses a lot of O/Os. They’ve got at least two that run out of Newburgh every night.
That would always go up my ### to discover one of them was on their way to my barn while I’ve been sitting there for an hour.
“Why are the O/O’s heading out before company drivers?”
“They’re based out of here.”
“Yeah, and they don’t work for the company, they’re contractors.”
“Not our call.” -
Out West the long peddle bids are the first to go. With an 1 1\2 hour stem time before you drop your three peddle trailers. These people run up on their hours everyday.

Almost all of them have brokerages, and I have probably hauled for most of them. 95% flatbed. But have hauled some van stuff.Brettj3876 Thanks this. -
