    hi guys,

i don’t now if im posting in the right section.

i have c15 accert 550 and it has 250k km after rebuild.
i live in canada alberta and its very cold here right now. i had kept my truck running all night for few nights on idle at 1000rpm. in summer time i had to add one gallon of oil every 10000km and now i have started adding 2 which is not normal for cat. I asked the guy who rebuild my engine and he told me that it could be because of cold weather and the idling i did. also he said that cold weather and idling causes the pistons and pistons rings to shrink. he told me to run the engine hot and not to idle for winter and it should get normal. my question to the experts here is, do you guys think this will get normal and pistons will come back to its normal place with the sleeves or i will need to get new piston rings..

    thanks..

Buy a ele. block heater and plug it in when your at home, they also have a ele. heater for batt. that wraps around them to keep them above 32 temp?

1000 RPM idle really isn't that high. I'd run it up around 1200-1250 myself.

You need to get it hot l. 200 deg. Or higher. On a good hard pull. A few times. Idling above 1000rpm. If not you end up glazing (polishing) the liners and it will never cure itself. Hang a winterfront on it but don't completely block off the air flow when running down the road. Sitting still cover grill completely. Heat is a diesels friend !

hopefully i haven’t done much bad to the liners.

    thanks again.

How many kms do you go between oil changes? Any Cat or Cummins Ive had would use more oil once I got closer to the time for an oil change

I always bumped my CAT to 1,000 rpms when idling to keep the temps up. Oil consumption after a rebuild shouldn't happen. It happened with mine. Probably ring gaps aren't right. Who knows. CAT will say the oil consumption is "in spec" so good luck...

How low does it get? My uncles truck gets to the add mark after about 5k on an oil change, then it drops to about the width of your pinkey finger and stays there until about 15k when it’s due for a change, even if you add a gallon it goes right back to the same spot
