It doesn't matter whose US DOT number he's running under. The time spent washing out the trailer is on-duty not driving. The time pulling the trailer to the wash out is driving. The time spent from the truck wash to home within a reasonable distance maybe off-duty if he is relieved of all responsibilities.

    Be safe.

Not true, the log book kicks in at 10,001 pounds GVWR or placarded quantities of HM. The CDL doesn't kick in until 26,001 pounds or placarded quantities of HM.

    Be safe.

Very true.....................As long as I'm employed as a CDL driver I have to account for my time. Any time a log book or time card is used I'm being tracked to make sure I get the required amount of time off duty.

DOT can be very picky people about the logs. A few years ago I drop a truck off at the company yard in Weedsport, NY and then took 2 weeks vacation and picked up a new truck in Blackriver Falls, WI. I got stoped at a scale in OH and they did not like that I came on duty at the different location. They were trying to find some way to give me ticket for it, they didn't, but wasted about 2 hours of my time trying.

In my opinion the best rule of thumb to use to simplify this is as follows...When you are not pulling a trailer and are not under dispatch to go pick up a trailer such as a drop and hook where you need to travel to another location for instance, You are "off duty" If you are under dispatch for any reason you are "on duty". I use my truck for personal conveyance all the time when I'm on the road but I never pull a trailer when logging off duty.

I suppose it depends on why you were placed OOS too. Probably wouldn't work if the reason was an equipment violation on the tractor!

Werner does this kind of funny. You send a macro on the MCT and it directly goes to logs department and is approved or denied in minutes. You have to be unloaded and not available for dispatch. When I use it is if I'm low on my 70 and empty or if I run out of hours at a customer after being UNloaded and want to go to a truckstop.

What we do is we call dispatch, they can check how many trucks are in the area waiting for a load, and they tell us if it will hurt us or not to do this. If it won't hurt much, they'll take you off the available list, THEN you request the personal drive time, and then you drive where you're going and put yourself on the available list. A lot of times you can do this and it does not change your position on the available list much. It's fine though because werner seems to know when they should just broker a load to get you out of the area. Heh, i remember one time i confused a guard because i came in to pick up a Schneider load. LOL.

I always log both ways when bobtailing because I live 90 miles from the yard.

if bobtailing from terminal to home and back can be loged on duty not driving, does that affect your driving time. my home is 3hrs from terminal. I was told i can log it on duty not driving but because i was driving it would only leave me 8hrs driving. how can you log on duty not driving and be charged driving time.

That isn't true, it's way off.

Technically personal use means you can log it as off duty!
If you logged something as on-duty it would not come off your 11 hour driving time, regardless.
